The latest is the start of the third trimester. FMLA requires you to give enough notice so she can do the paperwork to take the time off. Some kids arrive earlier than others so you don’t want to wait for the last 30 days.

This is a great point and didn’t consider baby coming early. Will look up what the rules with FMLA are, thanks!

Wouldn’t it make more sense to say something earlier if you don’t want her discriminated against? That way it’s documented that her employer knew about it.
Is this naive?

I totally understand OP! In normal circumstances, for my last pregnancy, i told my team at maybe 15 weeks.
But for this pregnancy because Deloitte has been doing layoffs etc I am more hesitant to tell them and I am waiting. I will tell them with enough time for them to find someone (hopefully) but I need to protect myself first. Maybe at my 6 month mark? Its tough to decide. I would especially do this in a smaller company who has been hit hard.

First off, congratulations! We’re expecting as well. We ended up informing week 14. Due in December so it’s ample time for everyone to get things in order prior to going out. I’m thinking it would be rather detrimental to her character if she withheld this information until the last minute and just popped “hey I’m having a baby in a few weeks and will be out for X amount of time”. Not saying it’s illegal but put yourself on the other side of that.
On another note a positive about the lockdown is the time to prepare and read. Use it to your advantage. We already built out the nursery and got the stroller and items alike, as time progresses it’s less effort on material and more on planning.

I’ve seen a lot of posts similar to this recently...and it’s just sad and unfortunate that this is the world we live in - 2020 in the US, afraid of being discriminated for being pregnant in corporate America. Blows my mind. Sorry I don’t have any advice, if I was pregnant (when I do), the moment second trimester hits, I’m telling the whole world and I could care less what anyone thinks or say, but that’s just me. If they want to fire me for whatever reason, well guess I’ll be a housewife then. 🙄🤷🏻♀️
I am due early Fall with my 2nd. in both pregnancies I notified my manager and direct team around 14 weeks (waited for 2nd trimester and first bloodwork to ensure health of myself and kiddo were looking good). Lucky that both times I’ve been supported. I haven’t had issues with backlash but every company and manager is different. I would say she needs to feel it out and decide what she feels most comfortable with. She should be able to notify HR confidentially to get an understanding of benefits and then work through the best time to tell her manager / team.
She should anticipate that projects will probably be skimmed down toward the end as Leave nears but nothing else should really change unless she or a doctor ask for it.
