All clients need to explain conference call etiquette when WFH to their employees. So far I’ve heard people washing dishes, talking to their spouse and kids, making lunch, and playing with pets...

You’re probably a real joy at parties huh

Ironically, yes. I’m not usually complaining about people living life and yelling at people to get off my lawn when I’m at parties though...

My entire team overheard my roommate asking our neighbor to buy cocaine during a call this morning. At first I thought they wouldn’t know it was me cause it’s an audio call with 8 people, but I later got a text from my manager about it 😬

Is your roommate Mitch McConnell? Just curious

Can’t control a pet. Just like you can’t control a toddler begging for attention. These are unprecedented times. It’s a unique time. I am doing my best with my kids at home. It’s such a struggle to balance. And this sort of post makes me feel like crap when I already been so stressed of trying not to feel like I’m failing at life because some feel you should be able to work as business as usual when the environment we are in, is the complete opposite

likefunny

RSM1 not when you are leading the call and you are the main speaker...

Wow... I’m really surprised by these responses so far. It’s hard to get a point across in 200 characters apparently. What I really care about is that you go on mute so all 20+ people don’t have to try to hear what is being said over all those things

I don’t care if you multitask and get things done while working, but it’s extremely distracting when you aren’t muted and nobody can hear the speaker over clanging dishes. As for the person playing with their pet, that was on a video call which made it far more distracting

like

Maybe it’s a good exercise in empathy, OP. It’s no problem to ask people to go on mute. I do on every call. At the same time, understanding that everyone is doing their best atm.

like

Guys, OP is just asking for people to go on mute. Are you all purposefully being daft?

likefunny

Yeah, not sure why this was hard for people to comprehend.

I play with my dog on conference calls 😜

And yet everyone is still capable of learning to use the Mute button.

My agency is actively empathising with parents who have kids at home - going out of our way to be understanding. I’ve been on video calls this week where colleagues have literally been wearing their toddlers. It’s been one of the best, most human working weeks of my life 😘

What does this have to do with using the mute button?

Maybe recognize this is new for everyone and be a little more considerate.

There’s actually this cool feature where you can mute everyone all at once, and they can unmute themselves when ready to talk. It’s been there since, well forever.

This works great when you’re the host. However, when the meetings are client-hosted and you have no control.... 🤷‍♂️

Currently working in private. Had our first team “catch up call” after the department was tasked with working from home. Many of them had never even joined a WebEx before, it was PAINFUL! Holy mute the tv if you aren’t going to mute yourself.

like

Playing with pets, okay... I don’t see a problem with any of the others.

likefunny

But you don't know who is doing this. There is a reason why video conference has not catch on.

like

OP, on your next call... just ask that everyone who is not talking put yourself on mute. Happy you, happy prob everyone else. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

like

Sadly this doesn’t always work. I work with older people who do not seem to know how to find their mute button. They think it’s ok to expose me and the client to their post nasal drip issues. Driving me insane and making me regret going to a boutique:(

Practice empathy

like

Yea it is. Muting all doesn’t mean they can’t unmute themselves. You should practice with some coworkers

Be a kinder, more patient human please.

Be a more considerate human by muting the line if you aren't speaking

I got a remote L6 SWE offer at Google but the RSUs are too low for that level ($625k over 4 years), could not negotiate it higher. I’ve accepted the offer but trying to be hopeful that I could make it more equitable in the future if I perform well. Hi guys,
Need help,I am joining
VMware Banglore on 27th June. During interview I told them I need wfh. They said it wil be wfh this entire year. Only mistake I did was i didn't permanent wfh. I took for granted like once I join i can opt for it ( as my VMware friends had said we can opt for it)
Now the offices have started, I am scared if they call me to office , I have 14months son, not willing to leave him n go for office.

So if I ask manager to give me permanent wfh will they agree ?
