All clients need to explain conference call etiquette when WFH to their employees. So far I’ve heard people washing dishes, talking to their spouse and kids, making lunch, and playing with pets...

Currently working in private. Had our first team “catch up call” after the department was tasked with working from home. Many of them had never even joined a WebEx before, it was PAINFUL! Holy mute the tv if you aren’t going to mute yourself.

like

My agency is actively empathising with parents who have kids at home - going out of our way to be understanding. I’ve been on video calls this week where colleagues have literally been wearing their toddlers. It’s been one of the best, most human working weeks of my life 😘

like

What does this have to do with using the mute button?

like

Can’t control a pet. Just like you can’t control a toddler begging for attention. These are unprecedented times. It’s a unique time. I am doing my best with my kids at home. It’s such a struggle to balance. And this sort of post makes me feel like crap when I already been so stressed of trying not to feel like I’m failing at life because some feel you should be able to work as business as usual when the environment we are in, is the complete opposite

likefunny

RSM1 not when you are leading the call and you are the main speaker...

You’re probably a real joy at parties huh

likefunny

Ironically, yes. I’m not usually complaining about people living life and yelling at people to get off my lawn when I’m at parties though...

like

Wow... I’m really surprised by these responses so far. It’s hard to get a point across in 200 characters apparently. What I really care about is that you go on mute so all 20+ people don’t have to try to hear what is being said over all those things I don’t care if you multitask and get things done while working, but it’s extremely distracting when you aren’t muted and nobody can hear the speaker over clanging dishes. As for the person playing with their pet, that was on a video call which made it far more distracting

like

Maybe it’s a good exercise in empathy, OP. It’s no problem to ask people to go on mute. I do on every call. At the same time, understanding that everyone is doing their best atm.

like

Guys, OP is just asking for people to go on mute. Are you all purposefully being daft?

likefunny

Yeah, not sure why this was hard for people to comprehend.

I play with my dog on conference calls 😜

My entire team overheard my roommate asking our neighbor to buy cocaine during a call this morning. At first I thought they wouldn’t know it was me cause it’s an audio call with 8 people, but I later got a text from my manager about it 😬

Is your roommate Mitch McConnell? Just curious

I surprisingly like it, makes my cold blooded vampire of a client seem human after all

Same.

Everyone’s environment’s different, and not everyone’s home can be big enough to accommodate the office-like setup

And yet everyone is still capable of learning to use the Mute button.

Maybe recognize this is new for everyone and be a little more considerate.

Chill out

There’s actually this cool feature where you can mute everyone all at once, and they can unmute themselves when ready to talk. It’s been there since, well forever.

like

This works great when you’re the host. However, when the meetings are client-hosted and you have no control.... 🤷‍♂️

like

You sound like you have a lot of growing up to do.

like

Lmao OP.. u built like the kid in class that used to remind the teacher that there was homework 😂😂

likefunny

Kmpg2 can we be friends?

Playing with pets, okay... I don’t see a problem with any of the others.

likefunny

But you don't know who is doing this. There is a reason why video conference has not catch on.

like

OP, on your next call... just ask that everyone who is not talking put yourself on mute. Happy you, happy prob everyone else. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

like

Sadly this doesn’t always work. I work with older people who do not seem to know how to find their mute button. They think it’s ok to expose me and the client to their post nasal drip issues. Driving me insane and making me regret going to a boutique:(

Practice empathy

like

Yea it is. Muting all doesn’t mean they can’t unmute themselves. You should practice with some coworkers

Be a kinder, more patient human please.

like

Be a more considerate human by muting the line if you aren't speaking

Hey ladies! What are your favorite go to basic t shirts? I was really liking the old navy luxe t shirts because of how soft and inexpensive they were, but they wrinkle so much. I don’t want a shirt that looks like I slept in after the first time I sit down, not that I have to steam before each wear. Bonus points for budget priced - I’m wfh with a 2 year old right now, so I want to feel/look decent but not be devastated if it ends up with baby slime on it.

I think the problem with consultants is you are overpaid from the very start because you generate revenue, even with zero skills and are willing to travel. Over time that evolves to arrogance because you think you know more than your clients when the reality is your sample set is quite small. I have spent equal time on both sides and would counsel you to be careful in a remote post COVID world because we are all realizing we have more employee capacity than we thought.

I went back to the office this month (3/4 days per week) and it’s been a positive experience. Plus it seems that some partners who are going in appreciated it. But the office is a 15 min drive away for me. Some people need to commute an hour plus to be there. Will they be at a disadvantage if they actually try to take advantage of hybrid WFH in the future?

I’m a 2nd year civil litigation associate at a mid-sized firm in south Florida. My dream has always been to go in house but was dissuaded by law school professors telling me not to. I’m at a crossroads now because I’m OVER the billing, but my boss and direct team is quite possibly the most amazing and supportive group. My boss is always willing to let us work remote or take vacations. My question is, is the grass greener on the other side? Should I go in house now or wait another 3 years?
