Where are my “don’t touch that pile” , “leave my desk alone”! “It’s in the third drawer behind the post it’s on the right?” Beautifully cluttered messy office people at!? I know precisely where everything is and You No Touchy !!!!

Hahah, I am a total maximilist, i do not believe in that minimalist "doesn't spark joy" BS lol. I love trinkets, I love to reuse and recycle things, I hate just throwing things out because I'll always end up needing them later. Some call that being a hoarder but I think I'm a very organized hoarder if I am one haha

I always think I'm going to need something, so I tend to hang on to things when I really shouldn't. So I'm always surrounded by some degree of clutter. I admit I'm always a little suspicious if someone's desk looks too clean. I wonder if they're actually doing anything.

I have the better office space in our house because my spouse is 3/2 hybrid while I am full time WFH with ~30% travel. So frequently when I’m away, they’ll sit at my desk rather than at theirs in a guest room. And they’ll start to fiddle - my cables aren’t in the right place when I come home - and they’ll realize my stuff is nicer than there’s, so borrow it. Then they’ll start to tidy…

I’m fine.

same here. I can get rid of things, but will need some time for grieving. Usually a couple of years.

Here I am 🫶🏼

Well, I can tell you guys that I see a lot of of myself in every single one of these replies. However, I got much better at the “mess“ on my desk by not having anything on my desk. I was remote for 3 1/half years so I had packed up my full desk before I went home just When Covid hit.
When I came back to the office as hybrid, I didn’t bring anything back. I had books, photos, files, paper personnel files. I downsized everything, brought it home and never took it back. And every once in a while, you have to move at work so it made the job easier for somebody else if I wasn’t in the office to do it. I was down to a full file drawer And a half of another drawer. I had no photos up. I had no stickers up I just had a few Post-it notes on my computer. That will make the easiest thing for you because as it’s been stated what you see around you will clutter your brain.
I realize that they’re in piles and you know where everything is. I’m the same. But give yourself a break make it easier at work. This is your life Line, everything that you do in your life comes from this money, make it easier on yourself and work smarter and not harder!

I need some advice. I’m the Director for a women’s only RTF. Everyone on site is my direct report, with the exception of the therapists (they report to the Clinical Director). One of the therapists has been a manipulative snake since she started here last December. This is her first job after college and she just turned 23. See comments for more info…

Our annual reviews are approaching & one of my direct reports has been with us for almost six years w/ little growth. My reco was to let him go & find a stronger, hungrier & more motivated designer at the same level. However, my boss instead wants us to promote him in hopes that will spark some motivation. I am not behind this decision & have voiced my multitude of concerns in promoting an employee who doesn't deserve it. HR is behind the decision! Thoughts on promoting an undeserving report?

My remit quadrupled+ in a recent re-org with no increase in pay/promotion, my new director is new to the company and was zero help, and I was passed over for recent promotion during the comp cycle. The new director essentially began shutting me down any time I ask for clarity in my career progression. Now they have taken credit for the project I’ve been building over the past year+ without giving me props whatsoever to higher ups. What is the best plan of action here?

"Everybody can be a leader" some say... "Leaders are nurtured not born" say others... True.

But... this is also true: "not everybody wants to be a leader" (whether they can or can't be). It is a fairly common practice in organizations with traditional career management structures for people to "be promoted" into leadership roles as the "end steps of the corporate ladder" that was climbed doing technical work. And, unfortunately, this doesn't work all the time

After years of hard work, I just got my first position in a leadership role! Yay! I’ll be leading a team of 12.
I wanted to know if you had any tips for me, things you wish you knew before, or things previous leaders did for/to you that you found admirable or stayed with you. I want to make sure I’m there for them and want to be a leader they will remember positively.

Thank you so much!!
