Why aren’t more small firm owners/partners ok with hiring associate attorneys on a part-time or flexible basis? And of course reducing their pay accordingly. What’s the basis or thinking behind it and is it backed by evidence or just firm culture?

If I were a partner trying to keep clients happy, I’d want associates who are available whenever I need them.

like

I'd imagine it's some combination of the fact that and the legal industry even the "part-time" jobs are pretty close to full-time, the heightened potential to be conflicted out of matters by a part-time associate who works for two firms in the area, and a hesitance to invest in an associate who has bigger fish to fry or is going to leave for a full-time position when it becomes available.

like

My guess is a latent fear of hiring someone who will be smart enough to steal their playbook/take their book. Alternatively the amount of time it would take to mentor a young/PT associate and the resulting reduction in firm profitability

like

Sounds like subconscious fears based upon little to no evidence to me.

Hello all, i have. A question regarding compensation for a lateral move. I just received a job offer for an UA position from a competing cyber insurance carrier for $70,000 + bonuses. This job will be based out of San Francisco. I currently make $30/hour for the same role in Chicago, after OT it’s about $60,000. Do you think it would be wise to accept the offer? Thoughts in general?

Friend of mine was supposed to receive an offer (told verbally) from Deloitte and then just found out they are pausing on hiring the role. How common is that? Seems wildly unprofessional that none of the partners called and instead it was the recruiter conveying that news. At McKinsey, if that happened, the head of the practice or the office would personally make the phone call at the very least.

What is the average amount of time to fill a role? How long in advance should a recruiter start working with a hiring manager to get their position posted? I think it depends on the industry but curious to hear if there is a national average and if that number is even realistic given the increased number of roles in the market. Also curious to know what average numbers some of you are seeing in your companies.

Home reno financing question. Have a big project coming up in the $120-150k range. Funding sources are:
- 90k from a heloc around prime
- 10k from a credit card that offers promo checks at 2-3% for 12-18 months
- 375k in a brokerage
- 5-6k per month cash that I can put towards the project, loans, or brokerage

I don't want to stop funding the brokerage because my FIRE plan is less numbers based than "hoard like dragon until it's enough" but maybe I should... How would you optimize?
