Hi guys, Now VMware is offering me a 35% percent hike of what I am earning at DellEmc. I just completed one year at DellEmc. Total 2.7YOE But I don't like to go out of Dell, due to some personal commitments I am planning to switch.
Is it a good time to switch?
Can I talk with my manager ?
Are they able to hike the salary of what VMware is offering? Please suggest me.

Agreed. Side hustle until it can be your full time hustle. Ownership is the only win
It’s because the money is pouring in. There is way too much work for the amount of people in the industry. We are constantly growing....
Yea gotta say, I was at a big traditional agency and legit did a super bowl commercial right before I got laid off and then the pharma world took me in. At first I felt salty about what I felt was a downgrade in the level of creativity in my work, but now that I’m making $20k more, have yearly performance bonuses written into my contract and actually work a 9-5 I’m very down with this side of the industry and also wish I made the switch sooner. My agency basically scoops up people from traditional agencies and turns them into pharma pros, there are places out there like that that exist!
W2O?
Pharma agencies are constantly expanding. My agency hired over 50 people this year and we’re still struggling to cover the work.
Will you hire me then? I’m serious.
Rising Star
I’m in pharma and cannot leave. I’m sure I will eventually, but it stings not being able to really contribute to my career or portfolio at work as recruiters continue to tell me they are looking for someone with “more traditional experience,” and that’s from the ones decent enough to not ghost me after some interviews.
To be fair OP, you kind of hint at this when you said you have to be a part of this side of advertising and enjoy the work. If I enjoyed it, I’d be doing fine and am on track for yet another promotion and have worked on stuff that can probably be entered into some award shows specific to pharma, once the holding company lets go of their freezes and holds. I don’t want to settle though.
I gotta pay the bills, so it is what it is, but anyone that is interested needs to take this industry stigma into consideration. I kinda had a sense going in, but I was under the impression that the issue was not being able to work on your book and tolerating a salary cut. I’ve continued to work on spec for my book and do not care about titles or salaries. Still, I can tell during a lot of interviews that their tone and interest completely changes when they ask about my current agency.
That’s fine, except every pharma job I come across says “must have pharma experience.” Makes me even less inclined to bother.
Again, I fail to see what’s attractive about that. “Oh, you’re disinterested in pharma gigs? Take a pay cut and give up the title you’ve fought for, and then maybe you’ll get this opportunity you don’t really want.”
I think we as an industry need to open our minds more. Yeah, flashy million dollar TVC campaigns were a huge draw for most of us, but the future is looking more and more diversified.

There's a metric fuck ton of opportunity out there to make good work in unexpected places. Don't let a shrinking cabal of ad elitists fool you.
The job postings are because of supply/demand (most people want to do consumer) and along with tech, healthcare is where the $$ is. The CPG giants and top retailers of the past are losing ground to diversified options via the Internet. I’m actually in PR, but switched from consumer to health and the job security/financial potential has been worth it.

This isn’t really as true as you think. The DTC machine has stalled out because the acquisition costs are stupidly high and none of them can really make money - compared to legacy CPG. That bubble has burst.
So while there is slightly more fragmentation and share numbers are static, the well run traditional cpg companies are doing great right now.
Online (really just amazon) is important but it’s still a small percentage of overall retail sales while DTC is so small you can’t even measure it. And the margins in DTC are terrible.
Unfortunately, that’s the only business segment that is hiring... I started my career in Consumer, worked on great brands, won awards, and moved to NYC dreaming of working at a cool agency. But all I found was in Pharma. And since I’m very passionate about paying my bills and having an apartment, I took the job. I hate it, but it pays good money.
