I have had to give my SSN on several job applications and I assume its for background checks. As long as I verify the company is totally legit I have never minded giving them my social.
Please make sure it's KP. As far as I know KP doesn't require SSN until you accept the offer.
Former client (Not current employer), they deal with a ton of patient data, and your ssn is used for background checks. Their security team is decent, expect them to do their jobs.
It's not illegal. Also, you don't have to provide it to most places until they make an offer. You can tell them that pending the offer you will provide your SSN.
Your Social Security number is required for various reasons, such as taxes, health insurance and background checks.
