I have been given a verbal offer of 145k base for a Sr. Associate role as Data Analytics Lead. The offer doesn’t come with any kind of bonuses or stocks.
I have a Masters and 5+ years of exp and my current comp is 115.5k + approx 5k bonus + ~20k in stocks (yearly refreshes) which makes my total current comp to 140k.
Is it worth taking the offer for increase in just the base?
What are my chances of negotiating into a VP level role with at-least 155k?

If it is to get your foot in, my recommendation is to first get a commercial counsel role at a smaller in-house legal team and take on more privacy related responsibilities. Then once you have more experience pivot into a fill time privacy role.
This is great advice as that is exactly what I, and many other colleagues, did as well.
It's not impossible but it can take a while. I started writing privacy & cookie policies for startups for cheap. Also, butt in on privacy as much as you can where you are. Maybe you can shadow someone on a DPA review or privacy assessment. Volunteer on IAPP knowledgeNet committees. It all adds up & gives you experience to add to your CV.
I started out in a non-legal role in privacy program management.
My advice, reach out to the Cal Bar Privacy Section and write some articles for them. I did that for a bit. Also, get a CIPM if you can. I liked that one.
Privacy Counsel 2, what do you do now?
Might be a good panel to attend and network with
Interesting I’ve worked with 2 and have had less than positive experiences
My path into a privacy role in big law involved joining a consulting firm in a non-legal role for 2 years to build up the foundational knowledge and experience needed to hit the ground running. Privacy is complex, and privacy associates and partners at mid and big firms are constantly underwater so no one (in my experience) wants to train anyone from scratch. They’d much rather hire someone who will subtract, not add, to their workload. At a consulting company you will immediately excel and be favored for work because of your legal education and because your peers will be fresh out of undergrad.
I went in to consulting from a boutique where I was more of a generalist transactional associate handling corp formation, governance, IP, contracts, nonprofit, etc. I had an “in” because I moderated a GDPR panel with an MD at the consulting firm, so that helped me informally “interview” and get my name in front of him.
Bc hiring is a competitive sport. I would suggest speaking with an agency recruiter specializing in privacy. Speak with Kate Warth @ JWMichaels. She may know folks willing to consider someone making a transition.
But ID to privacy will be very tough right now at the majors (law firm or in house)
The boat where a CIPP cert and license could get you in has sailed here in the U.S. I’d say 2021 was probably the last year that would work now that there are people with experience here in the U.S.
Another avenue is going to a firm and joining their incident response/data breach group and working your way into advisory/regulatory compliance. But the hours are long, and dealing with cyber insurance is a nightmare.
