With MBB hiring more people than ever (esp with the recent exp hire push), does the MBB brand get diluted for exit opps? Each of them have 3x or 4x revenue in the past 15 years (much of that in emerging markets, but still significantly in the US) corresponding to larger starting classes. With more and more people in the labor market with MBB on their resumes, has that made the relatively static pool of “desirable exits” more competitive?

Note: not at an MBB but currently interviewing

I agree, but that this still matters to a certain extent. Analogously, MBB have had to expand beyond their core strategy work to grow to the level they are now. That means the average analyst isn’t getting staffed on as many strategy projects as they would in the past.

That depends on the standards for experienced hire hiring.

Hiring someone who's designed a guided missile to advise companies that build and design those things isn't "lowering standards", it's just smart.

Also, the fact that there's a large uptick in business likely indicates that there's likely an uptick in the industries that would generate exit opportunities.

like

How could this possibly be answered now? Wouldn’t this be something impacted in 2-3 years when the massive number of people currently being hired start looking for exits?

like

I understand where the hunch comes from OP. But I think it’s largely overblown. And within the firm, nobody really differentiates between EH and regular hires

likehelpful

Sorry, did not mean to call out EH specifically - just observing as a data point for larger and larger classes of junior hires

The pool of desirable exits has not remained static. 15 years ago, there were not nearly as many opportunities to work at FAANG or elsewhere in tech, for example.

My guess is that the number of exits has changed alongside the numbers of competitors, but the job requirements are so specific (need technical plus business experience for product management roles), and interview processes so arcane (several rounds of fit plus cases plus assignments) that too many people apply to too many things in an effort to basically win the job lottery. End result is that things look very competitive.

like

The underlying implication that experienced hires ‘dilute’ the brand is misplaced, elitist, and false.

like

What is an EH?

It could be the case that the experienced hire cohort is in fact worse, but that would be more due to an insufficient measuring stick at the entrance than an overall indictment of those that are experienced.

like

Ok now I really wish I could edit my post lol

I am not commenting on the quality of EHs (I myself would be an EH if I got the offer), just on the fact that they add to ever growing, larger classes of junior hires, including undergrads, MBAs, advanced degree, etc.

like

I also don’t think the quality of exit ops have deteriorated. Have seen EH who joined during covid already leave for start ups and Fang

like

What makes you think that the pool of desirable exits is relatively static?

Ps1, you and I are generally aligned. I am not claiming that consultants are the lifeblood of tech. Yes, salespeople sell and marketers market and so on. I'm claiming that consultants exit to those aforementioned roles, and more of those roles exist today than 10-15 years ago.

Our standards for hiring have not changed, we just hire more, and growth is consistent with the industry (albeit a bit higher this year to make up for the slower hiring last year)
