How long do background checks typically take?
I have an initial recruiter phone interview with Square Thursday. Is it it just a phone call or is it a video call and they didn’t specify. If it’s a video call what’s the dress code like? I’m coming from consulting so all my interviews were in suits. Any tips to get past the recruiter phone screen?

@SC1 I mean, if you were hired in as an L10 or above and job hopped at the Director level or above that'd be a red flag. L5 or L6 equivalent, not so much. 😆

If I am looking for someone to build a practice or put into a lead role. Basically if I am hiring someone to build a practice around - I would pass on you.
If I am looking for an engineer or someone that I can rotate though easily - then I am fine with your experience

OP: Job hopping is considered less than a year (and even more specifically 6 months or less) 2 times in a row or more. Having a short stint once (or even once after every few jobs if you’ve been in the workforce for a while) is usually okay as long as you can explain why you made the move or are looking to make a move.

Until 2015: Various international consulting gigs
2015-2016: Canadian job 1 (contract)
2016-2017: Canadian job 2 (contract)
2017-2019: Canadian job 3 (FTE)
2019 - 2019: a few months at D
End of 2019-end of 2020: Smaller consultancy
Early 2021 - date: SM at ACN
Moral of the story: it doesn't matter if you are in a niche area, have specialized skills and can back up your job hops with a story.

No. Unless you work at a very traditional industry company where it’s typical to be employed for life type. That’s actually changing a lot at even the most traditional employers
In tech literally no one cares, in fact that means this person is very desirable, especially if the companies are good and movement in role/company is upward. They’ve gained a lot more skills.
Are those 3 jobs with no promotion per company? That would be a red flag for me.
Companies are also bad at creating career paths for technical talent. Some people don't get promoted because they want to code and not be a people manager.

Old school thinking! The question back in the day was what value can I bring to a company, now it’s what value does this company bring for me. Also no more pensions means people move around!
I was 33 when I broke 11 months in a role for the first time.
In demand skill set and super volatile career path (and a few poor choices) lead to colorful outcomes.
Companies don’t give 2 bananas about you. Teams and managers do.
The desire to belong is part of us as humans. It’s also engrained through mob mentality in the corporate world.
I would do all that I can to ensure you and your leader get along well.
