How much did you work with lawyers in your old role? Most of the non-practicing lawyers we hire from program offices (non irs civilian agency) are in roles that interact with ogc frequently.
In my previous statistician roles? Rarely. In my current role? I am a lawyer. I was in the statistician roles while going to law school at night and left for big law after graduating. Have been practicing bankruptcy law for 5 years now and just started my tax LLM at night.
If you want to be a lawyer for the federal government, I would not recommend NOT practicing law for any period of time -- even to take a non-lawyer job at your target agency.
If I were in your shoes, I would probably try to angle for some tax work at your current biglaw firm, or apply to other firms as a tax associate (taking a hit to class year seniority if necessary).
I think this is where I've settled... I appreciate the insight! Unfortunately I've been told that won't be an option at my current firm but looking at lateral opportunities to try and accomplish this
