I would say it’s not that difficult. Show to work and do what you’re told and you will make it. I think the hard parts are hours you need to put in and stress of working with different people.
The CPA requirement is probably the most difficult part for most people. If you have your CPA and stick around long enough you’ll get promoted.
I will promote to manager this October. It’s really not that hard. If you are just decent at your job, but make sure to work hard, you can make it from what I have seen. Defiantly hardest part is the hours, but everyone is working it with you. Oh and not jumping ship for more money to other jobs lol
Same question for advisory/ consulting
I'd say it's relatively easy...
PwC takes an extra year to promote to senior so my understanding is it normally takes you 6 years total to reach manager. My PwC friend said the “earliest” early promo can happen 6 months early at most (so that would get you down to 5 years at least for manager promo) - is this true?
For me, it took 4 years total (2 yrs staff 2 yrs senior). But times were different last year (when I got promoted) and I was one of only a couple people in a class of 5 that had their CPA so that automatically weeded out the other folks. Also work in an office that has been high growth consistently.
My hours were not abnormally high or anything like that either. I think I only charged 100 over the charge hour goal. Every service line/office is different but that was my experience and I personally don’t think I worked insanely hard for manager promotion. But you do need those strong partner connections, the ones who will go to bat for you.
Clout + business case = whatever you want at the firm. If you or your partner are unknowns good luck. If your group/office/the firm is not doing well, good luck. It's like rules 1&2 for big 4 career advancement.
