Would you say your pay is equal to the cost of living right now?

I’m a GM and no it’s not. I can’t even fathom how my AM’s let alone my baristas make ends meet. Many many roommates I imagine. Multi generational housing is once again becoming the norm instead of the exception simply so people can have a safe place to live and work life balance.

No. I have to decide between rent and food. Barely making it.

Based on the fact that I need 2 roommates just to make ends meet, I'm gonna go ahead and say no, my pay is not enough to match the cost of living.

like

Wow 2 roommates? I can’t even imagine but I completely understand

I have to agree and say no, it is not

like

absolutely not. I make about 2k a month. An average “cheap” apartment in my area is $800 a month, my car payment is $400 and insurance is another $140, which would leave me less than $700 to live off of for food, other bills, student loans, emergency expenses etc. Luckily I am still in college and commute while living with my parents, otherwise I’d probably be struggling to survive.

like

I say stay with your parents as long as you can!

like

Definitely not. I make too much money to qualify for food stamps but not enough money to pay bills, rent, and buy food.

like

I remember my parents tried to get food stamps once, my dad was forcibly retired due to disability (he lived through a forklift backing off a truck and right on top of him and even managed to keep working an additional 9 years. I was all of 6 months at the time) and my mom had been laid off due to the economy, and welfare said their cars were worth too much and they had to sell them. My mother told her ‘f* that sh*, I’m not selling my paid off vehicle that transports my children to school and me to whatever work I can find just because you think it’s worth too much. I’m not asking for full welfare checks, I’m just asking for food stamps to feed my children until I find stable work again!’ She was so pissed and ended up yelling and the lobby applauded. My little nine year old self was so stoked that my mom was a total bada**!

like

Absolutely not. It’s no where close to

like

NO!

like

Unfortunately no I’ve had 4 years of work experience I’m asking for 15 and minimum in az is 14.35 per hour and to live alone in a one bedroom apartment average rent is 2000 yet my checks are only about 900 while working 40 hour (after taxes) it’s just insane to me

like

It’s still about what it was 14ish years ago then. I lived in Tucson made about $11 an hour worked 50ish hours a week and went to school and still lived on Ramon and potatoes. Thank my lucky stars that at the time I was still young enough to be under my parents insurance and still drove the car I did in high school otherwise I would have had to cut out food all together. This is the American dream now. Insane debt and a truly terrible economy.

like

NO.

like

Not at all

like

Far from it, living under paycheck to paycheck just survive.

like

I agree, the cost of living has shot up yet the minimum wage a majority of companies offer hasn’t moved. They don’t even offer what you’re worth anymore either. It’s all about how low they can pay you and how hard they can work you for it.

like

I would need roommates to be able to afford to live

like

I need a roommate now even with me and my husband

like

Not even close. I think all jobs should be required to keep pace with cost of living increases instead of cheating thier employees to appease investors.

like

My last ‘cost of living’ increase got me to 40k a year, about $20 an hour based on a 40 hour work week. Except, I was the manager and salary so even though I worked 60-70 hours a week I wasn’t really compensated for it. Sure I got benefits, that I paid for and they were crap, but I still had to have roommates just to make ends meet, and even with roommates it’s not like I had much to put back for emergencies.

Let’s just say that when my mom called asked me to move to WA where she and my dad were retiring to because she needed help with him and herself I was ready to go within a month. It’s weird living with my parents again, but I got the ‘mother in law’ attachment so it’s more like living in a duplex and my parents are my neighbors. I don’t have to work as much, I have a safe place to live, though I’m pretty sure my dog prefers my mom, lol, and I’m much healthier than I used to be. My blood pressure and anxiety meds have been halved and my hair stopped falling out.

The economy and the lack of empathy from employers is literally causing us to work ourselves to death.

like

Nope $15 an hour for $1500 -$2000 for a one bed or studio apartment is outrageous to think it's a living wage

like

Yeah they really do I did the math to have any decent amount to save for car or medical emergencies we would need to make 23-24 an hour in the city I'm in

like

Definitely not. Some days I spend more for food and transportation than I’m able to earn.

I'm a cashier. We just got a new manager, and she's making things really hard for us. She starts work at 4:30am and leaves around 2:30pm, but she still expects us to stay until 6pm and work on the weekends! She gives us really long shifts and doesn't give us much time for breaks. And when we ask her about it, she gets mad.

I'm worried that if I speak up, she'll make my life even harder. I don't want to lose my job because of this—do you guys have any advice?
