Would you take a corp strategy job at a F100 or a software engineer role at a FAANG if you wanted to maximize your salary 10-15 years out? I know initially tech wins but in the long term is the path to management more lucrative in general?

Software at FAANG and it’s not even close

These are very different jobs. Do the one you’ll enjoy more — it will lead to higher performance anyway 🙂

Tech swe. A corporate job has a slower career progression than, say consulting. So 10-15 yr in corporate would be what, an SM in consulting (where consulting is not mbb)? Faang swe can make SC or manager money in year 1.

What you should consider isn't role, but aptitude and desire. The kind of people who go into strategy because they want to run a business are not the same as the people who go into engineering because they like working by themselves on complex problems. And aptitude. A mediocre swe will make more in the long run than a mediocre f100 corp strat person. They'll never reach the heights of their careers, but swe higher pay will maintain a lead. But all bets are off if they're un the top 1% of their fields; the strategist can become a hotshot ceo/executive, and the other can be a hotshot expert on swe or be a startup founder.

10-15 years?!

I think tech still wins if you include investing the initial salary difference in the market...

If Both are good performers and promote in a similar time, I think it'll take until the VP level for a f100 corp strategy role to get ahead of the SWE role

like

Whichever path gives you RSUs with the potential to appreciate. Could be FAANG SWE, could be Corp strat.

like

You'll be rich either way. Do what you're better at, the additional $$ won't be worth the feeling you'll have if you don't fit in/perform to your fullest

like

Tech swe assuming you have the aptitude and interest. Could also shift to management role too.

Terminal level roles in top tech cos right now pay equivalent to upper level management in f100, many times more if the f100 is in lcol. It’s hard to get to upper management, few roles in the pyramid but lots and lots of ic terminal roles in swe.

like

One underrated aspect of SWE is the fact that you can work part time or contract once you develop your skill set. This means you can retire early and pick up interesting projects at your convenience.

like

Check out principal or distinguished engineer TC as SWE

Hitting even staff eng is an enormous feat, please god don’t look at levels.fyi, pick an equivalent YOE and assume that’s where your TC is going to end up

like

In tech the SWEs/PMs generally become upper management, not the strat/ops folk.

Hello fishes,

I am new here. This is my first post.
I am a b.tech + mba (tier 1). I joined my first job in 2009 and still in the same company. I am into marketing especially digital marketing.

As I have never switched my job in last 13 years I know I am paid less than industry standard.

I just want to understand what should be my salary as per industry standard as per my education, experience and profile (marketing)

Does it matter if I don’t meet the specific job requirements when transferring H1B? The job posted requires CPA license but I haven’t got it. The employer is still willing to hire me. I know for PERM process, meeting minimum requirements is important but not sure if H1B have such requirement. I heard that for H1B as long as it’s a position requiring bachelors degree and specifically occupation that should be fine. But kinda worried about this.

I applied to a job at KPMG and did the first two rounds of interviews, general interview, then case study and competency. Never before have I had such a positive feedback at the end of an interview of the 2nd, both said really like me, I did well etc.
It's now been 3 weeks since the interview and I still haven't heard back from the team other than the odd HR email saying they are following up with them. Is there something going on internally, I.e hiring freeze in the London office atm?

So i have been fortunate that i have managed to go through my career without the need for a degree. I was lucky enough to have been hired by one of the worlds top consulting firms, worked with a whole lot of big clients and travelled a lot. It's gotten to the point where I am not even asked about the lack of a degree on my resume. Personally though, it bothers me. I have a whole bunch of certifications in my industry…but just no formal degree. (cont'd)

One of the reasons I want to transition from industry to consulting (tier 1) is that I get frustrated when I have to collaborate with mediocre people. My assumption is that Tier 1 consulting firms hire really sharp people and if I can get in, I’ll be collaborating with folks on top of their game (not expecting much from clients). I’m aware there are personal aspects I need to work on like my mindset, patience etc etc, but I just get so frustrated with blatant stupidity.
