Would you work at a company that works in the defense industry? I have had conversations about this with friends. I personally wouldn’t due to the potential that I could build something that would take someone’s life away. I also realize the other perspective that having the technology is buys our freedom so it’s selfish to not. What do you think?

Yep and wouldn't think twice about it. In fact let Bell, Lockhead, or Northrup call me right now. I'll start today, on a Sunday

like

That’s good! I’m sure they’re hiring a ton all the time

like

If I didn't have any other options, I probably would. But I would definitely have to think about it and consider all of the factors, including what I specifically would be doing as part of the company.

like

That makes sense. I think there are ways you can ask them and they’ll work around your preferences. My husband and his friends all work in defense

I’ve spent my whole career avoiding defence jobs, even when they were the best paid or easiest to get jobs locally. No judgement on anyone who does work there, I’ve hired plenty of people with defence backgrounds .
Working in healthcare tech now, I feel I really can make a positive difference and that’s my biggest personal driver.
Defence would have felt wrong.

like

I’m so adjacent to it because my husband and all his friends are in defense and they have it good. But because I come from parents who sought asylum and had to live through a war no one wanted to fight, I’m avoidant of the industry myself

Nice! Glad to hear it

I don’t think there is an issue working for in the defense industry. However, if you have doubts, then do not do it. I personally never wanted to build the bigger, better bomb and instead have a career in medical software improving the outcomes for patients.

like

Medical software always has a compelling mission statement which makes it a very compelling industry choice. Defense is more nuanced but can be seen the same way as you see it as protecting freedom

Honestly, I am desperate for a job right now. I don't care who it is for at this point, I would take it. If I had options though, no, it wouldn't be my first choice.

like

You should apply then! They’re always hiring

Defense companies are some of the best paying companies around.

Their retirement matching is unparalleled. Their pay is more tied to the cost of living for the immediate market which does make it tricky for those who prefer to live more in the city

I had a colleague who was Jehova's witness, working on a regular piece of operating system used by many customers. When he found out that the system was used on servers in military (not used for offensive capabilities, I believe), he quit his job because of his religious beliefs. Now, I asked myself: would someone in similar position quit a job in say food supplier because it delivers meals to military ? Anyhow, with the geopolitical situation geting more dire esp. in Europe, I'd personally have no qualms about joining a defense company.

A few months ago, there were articles about how Juniper Park/TBWA’s hand sign saved the life of a kidnapped girl in a car. But the next day, reporters asked the guy who called the cops about it and he said he had no idea what the hand sign meant, he actually called the cops because the kidnapped girl kept mouthing “Help me.” I’ve heard of agencies exaggerating sales results or click through rates in case studies, I really hope JP/TBWA isn’t exaggerating about, literally, saving someone’s life.

I am a contract employee that was just brought on a month ago. I have done well with onboarding and learning their tech. I have now been asked to design an architecture for an upcoming project, and document it all. Nothing at this company has been well documented before. I have a feeling they just planning to use my previous experience and then let me go since my pay is high. Is there a way I can safeguard against this?

Which is the more lucrative and flexible long term career path when comparing .NET development vs salesforce development.

By flexible I mean in terms of moving between positions, companies and technologies.

I've done both and am currently doing salesforce development but don't want to get pigeonholed.

What should I reasonably expect from a junior?

I manage a junior developer that's been with the company for about 18 months. I end up providing them of TON of support. I need to give them extremely detailed instructions or they fail. For bugs, I need to point them to a specific function that's causing the bug. For new features, I'm basically writing their method signatures and defining their test cases.

I've tried asking them to do more on their own, but when I do, they fail spectacularly.

I'm really not sure how badly I want to work for them and I don't want to be laid off months after being hired on. Anyone know what Amazon hiring is like?
