Call to Action: Take time this week to write down two actionable steps you can take to be more aware of and actively address microaggressions in your life. This may include educating yourself on common microaggressions, intervening when you witness microaggressions or starting a conversation about allyship with your family, friends and coworkers.
Understanding: Microaggressions are defined as subtle verbal or nonverbal insults or denigrating messages communicated toward another person. Often, this is by someone who might be well-intentioned, but unaware of the impact their words or actions. Members of marginalized groups face microaggressions on a regular basis. Even though people who participate in microaggressions don’t always realize what they’re doing, the remarks and snubbing actions still have a harmful impact. Ways allies to stand up to microaggressions at work include:
Embracing empathy and offer a safe space for underrepresented peers to ask questions and raise concerns about microaggressions and other challenges they’re facing.
Raising awareness on the different types of microaggressions that can be unintentionally committed by anyone.
Speaking up against microaggressions in the moment or by educating the aggressor privately.
Provide honest feedback to management on microaggressions you’re seeing and encourage leadership to seek out new voices and perspectives that can contribute to inclusivity.
Open doors to opportunities by promoting the ideas and contributions of underrepresented employees, recommending them for projects and sharing practical tips for getting more visibility.
Learn More: Watch Microaggressions are like Mosquito Bites (2min). The video quickly explains why microaggressions are damaging and also recaps a few very common phrases that can be perceived as microaggressions.

Alternately, you could be less judgemental of people's unintentional flaws. :-)
