I’m 25 years old, graduated in 2017, and am interviewing for a Strategy Manager role with a pre IPO software company that is valued at ~$700M. In the interview, the hiring manager asked me if I was okay being an individual contributor for a year, having the manager level title + salary, but not having any direct reports. It’s basically a utility player role for GTM, Pricing, Sales strategy, product, Corp Dev, etc. What should I be thinking about? Does this sound good or bad?

Does anyone else struggle to define how ambitious they want to be? I feel like I’ve always pushed to be the best and achieve the next milestone, and I think if I tried I could become a partner or executive or what have you (I’m a manager now). But I’m also tempted to switch over to a less stressful, internal job (for the same pay, just less steep comp growth) and just be comfortable and enjoy life (contd)

I just received a verbal offer at a VC and am now just waiting for my contract/compensation details to come through. People say to never accept your first offer, but I am aware that I’m pretty unqualified compared to their normal hire (I’m a “culture fit”). It’s a dream role & a dream company. How hard should I push for compensation?
