I need to approach a manager who has received several comments that there is perceived favoritism. They have a team of hard, strong workers who have been with the company for years. A great new employee was hired several months ago with a strong technical skillset. The manager constantly praises this employee in front of the rest of their team, and consistently says comments like, "(New employee)" is the best person EVER to do this task!" making colleagues feel like their previous work in successfully getting that task done for years is unvalued. Any advice for how you would approach the manager, or how you would advise the employees who are submitting complaints?

How can you tell when you're being cocky vs when you really do deserve a promotion? I'm feeling like I can produce much better work than my AS (next level up) peers, but I'm never given the chance.
