Hi there! Interviewing w/Amazon for a non-tech role (Associate Category Manager aka Associate Buyer) and was asked what my salary requirements are for base+bonus+equity. Can anyone share insight on what Amazonians make in this role. I have 4 YOE and glassdoor is not very helpful.
Any feedback is appreciated 🙏 Amazon
Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

After the re-level, I proactively flagged the gap and suggested alternatives, a sign on bonus or guaranteed first year bonus, to help close it without changing the base. Neither was addressed or acknowledged in the final offer letter. The offer itself had a fully discretionary bonus structure, a 90 day PTO lockout (15 days total), and a verbal promotion timeline that was explicitly excluded from the contract.
Companies do internally re-scope roles but they also pull this shenanigan to get higher quality talent at lower cost. It could be either / or but that's besides the point so I wouldn't read too much into why it happened.
What's important is you negotiated in good faith and they decided to blow that up. So at this point, unless you need the income, I'd walk.
Is this a classic bait and switch? How badly do you want this job?
Since they pulled this, I don’t really want it anymore. I’m trying not to personalize it and just keep it business, but I’m find it very negligent and disrespectful.
Yes, I would ask for a different title that is equivalent and $15,000 to $20,000 of the $30,000 and full health insurance, stock options all the sick days, 6 days, vacation days, matching 401k and a contract in writing
Personal days not 6 days I meant to type
I would try to negotiate back to the original salary and title. Reiterate that the roles you’re interviewing for at competitors are for the higher level title and pay.
Say that despite the rescope; you still bring unique, valuable and tangible skills they go beyond the job description. I would focus on needing a role where you’re challenged and can grow into some of the deliverables; If that isn’t present or your meet all the qualifications - the you’re over qualified for the role.
I would just go back and be blunt - “hi abc company - I’m excited at the prospect of working together, but the bottom line for me is $xxx,xxx/year to be work jumping ship. I bring talents x,y, & z over and above what’s required in the role, and I would need pay that is market competitive for my skills and expertise”
Use payscale, Robert half, Mercer and any other pay survey data you can; to support what the role pays in your area and present this to person.
If they’re not willing to play ball, they want you but don’t want to pay for it. Move on unless you need this job.
I guess a few things -
They want you but for less
They really don’t have budget or scope anymore
They didn’t think your skills matched the initial role but they like you
If you liked the role etc., would walk (and you did). But if you see a future there, I’d just try to get more salary and be ok then with being at the de scoped level. If it’s a bump from where I’m at, I’d be ok with it.
