If anyone asks about adding a feature, your first answer should be “no”.

If it comes up again, then mention it might get added to the backlog.

Many folks will prey on new product managers and get them to agree to things that then get sold / communicated as being a done deal. You don’t want your name attached to that, so make sure your default answer is “no”.

like

SPM2 - your suggestions are good but looks like you’ve been burnt a lot. Every suggestion is to safe guard and ‘play safe’ category.

My take, as a new PD you have the leverage to fail, but fail fast and learn.

question and understand your stakeholders need don’t respond to their asks.

Do you have a 30/60/90 plan from your manager ?

like

Even if you can get it verbally…. It is useful.

It always helps me know what to focus on, what to say no to… and I can claim success with executing the 30/60/90 day plan.

There are performative aspects of a product job. And one of them is to make sure that I am seen as successful.

Congratulations, Taylor! The comments here are incredibly helpful. I’m transitioning from program management to product management and have noted all the advice in this thread.

like

You are doing fine, I can clearly see it.

Congrats Taylor! any suggestions or tips on your experience getting the job?

I would agree with the 30/60/90 day plan, make sure you know exactly what it is expected from you so you will know what success looks like and be able to exceed those expectations.

A friend is considering deferring an offer (stem PhD) for 1 year straight out of undergrad to work in NY, either in a research institution or a biotech. She does not have any real work experience outside of her lab (3 years) and an adjacent internship. Another factor is she is just generally feeling burnt out on school after the last few years.
To what extent did you find that a year or two of work impacts prospects coming out of PhD? How might a year off from school impact her PhD work itself?

With product design questions, I struggle to identify user groups. Once I do everything starts flowing and I’m confident. But the initial identification of user groups is something I find challenging. What’s your go-to way of doing this? For example, the question “design a podcasting app for truck drivers.” What types of truck drivers can I select so that I can prioritize a user group to focus on and begin identification of pain points and solutions?
