A friend (decorated disabled combat veteran) is interviewing for a program mgr job. The job is a hybrid (3 days onsite) position for which he is fully qualified but requires he move to a city 4 hours away from his home. He really wants the position, but due to his PTSD he visits a local mental health professional he trusts, and it has helped him tremendously. Could he ask for medical accommodation so that he could work 100% remote? How could he do this if anyone knows. I have no ideas.

Can he Telehealth to his provider? If not, he can ask if he gets the offer but I doubt anyone would say that’s a reasonable accommodation, unfortunately.

like

He definitely can! I suggest he keeps looking in case the current job can't accommodate him.

like

One option he/she can do is to start with the company in the hybrid mode and then work it out with their team. Sometimes it is easier to do that once you are working at the company.

Your friend has a valid concern, and it's not uncommon for individuals with mental health conditions to require accommodations to perform their job. To answer your question, yes, your friend can ask for medical accommodation, including working from home, as long as it does not create an undue hardship for the employer. The first step would be for your friend to talk with the hiring manager or HR representative and explain his situation and the accommodation he is seeking. It is helpful to have documentation from his mental health professional to support the request.

like

Employees are entitled to request reasonable accommodations for disabilities, including mental health conditions, under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). For an accommodation to be considered valid, it must not cause undue hardship for the employer. If your friend seeks to work from home due to his PTSD, he can request this accommodation.

like

I think so as well. I work 100% remote as a program manager, but my employer is in the UK. I don't understand why this other company could not accommodate it for him, but, again, I know nothing about such things. He told me he is willing to drive out (4 hrs) to the company site a few times a month, however.

why can’t zoom work for the therapy sessions?

like

I think most jobs can be remote these days. If not those one, he can find one that is.

If he needs medical accommodation, he needs to directly ask his employer for it and sit down with him for the process. Unless of course the employer already knows that it is necessary for his condition. He needs to read his employee handbook to see if his employer already has an accommodations request procedure or a non-discrimination policy. He needs to be specific in his condition and explain briefly why he needs one. It is better if it is done in writing. His employer may request for his medical records.

I would recommend that he is honest with the employer during the interview process so they can make the best decision for both parties. Right now remote work is a hot topic and some companies are taking a hard stance one way or another.

If he can be hybrid, he can be remote. Being remote because of a health care provider situation is a reasonable accommodation.

Hi everyone,
So I had my NIPT and NT scans last week and I’ve been getting pieces of the results back from my doctor in the patient portal. All seems okay but I’m a bit confused. Does anyone know if FirstScreen is the same thing as NIPT? I was under the impression that NIPT was in 90th percent of certainty for Down syndrome but the result we got, labeled FirstScreen indicate 83% certainty so I’m confused if there are more results coming? I messaged the doctor but haven’t heard back yet.

Have some active/reserve time, wrapping up graduate school, and am now considering either a) come back to the business world or b) go active and retire before 50 and live off a nice pension. Obviously there are draws to both. I’m an officer for what it’s worth so I can realistically retire at O-5, MAYBE O-6.
