What other industries? A lot of folks will talk about having deep industry experience. Having knowledge about the product and customer and a decent grasp on how to read data should help.
She did recruiting / training / fundraising at a wildlife refuge in Bolivia for four years of all freakin things...then went back to school for zoology but had to drop out to take care of her mum. Been doing restaurant work during nights and real estate during the day - which definitely has plenty of sales experience, and I guess uses statistics and data...I'm fuzzy on the details. Still though...does that sound doable, @AD1? I'm not a hiring manager so I don't know how much of an uphill battle she's looking at.
Short of knowing your friend's full background and skills, as well as knowing what exactly in the area of marketing (which is a huge field) she's looking to get into, it might be tough, yeah. Has your friend figured out what she actually wants to do and why/what her goal and vision for her career is? That's needed before jumping into the next thing just because it sounds interesting.
I second what the other poster said. If I were her I'd do some more investigating about positions she thinks she might be interested in and see if she can connect with people in those positions to learn more about the nature of the work. That should help her figure out where her skills might align and where she may still be lacking. I think her best bet is to find a position that utilizes the skills she already has. If there is a big gap I'd recommend seeing if she can take on marketing work in the gig she already has or adding on volunteer experiences where she can implement that work.
