Does anyone here work for Silicon Valley Bank? They recently acquired Boston Private. I’m a candidate for a job at Boston Private. Wondering if SVB is planning layoffs in the near term at BP? Also, does anyone know the anticipated benefits to be rolled out from SVB as the parent company? Specifically interested in health insurance providers. Thanks in advance for any information! My contract covers 185 days. Weekends, breaks, all of July, and most of June and August are all part of the other 180. This week I got a zoom invite for a meeting occurring during Christmas break scheduled by an outside agency. I didn’t have to tell my principal “no.”He told me I wouldn’t be attending. Just for kicks and giggles, offered to meet with that parent at 8 o’clock on a Sunday morning and see what their reaction is.
No response needed. Enjoy your break!
Shows her fragility and disrespect to you as a professional. Totally ignore this parent., just another misguided and entitled parent.
No you have a life outside of working hours and even though teachers spend time outside of class doing work, enjoy your time with your family.
It would have been so funny if you had called the student on Christmas Day asking for clarification or to explain what he or she meant had it been a writing assignment. I'm sure "Mother" would have been dismayed.
Is it wrong to be upset? No, not at all.
Should you say something? That depends on what you hope to accomplish by saying something.
Most likely, you are not going to change the parent's mind.
Try not to think about it and move on. You've got better and happier things to focus your attention on.
Assign the kids a lot of homework over the break in retaliation. Not really, but it would be fun to do. Hopefully your admin supported you. No need to contact the union unless discipline would come from it.
Back when I taught middle school, I made sure that all projects/tests/assignments were done by the last week before fall break. Usually for me, I had a unit project and the last day to turn it in was the day before break. Most students turned it in early and I graded theirs then but I always had a few that waited and I graded them the last day. I did not want to stretch a unit over the break because I’d have to review what we went over before the break. I wanted to start a new unit when they came back. Now, that does not help your current situation but just maybe food for thought.
In your current situation, if something came of this by the parent. I’d just tell them what your plan was to grade on the preplanning days. I am guessing there is no report card or progress report soon, so the grade should be ‘rolling’ right along.
I'm not sure why you even know this parent went to admin.
Surely your admin responded by saying there's absolutely no way anyone should be working during a non-contracted time and then left it at that.
You have more than enough reason to be pissed off about an unreasonable demand. Don't do anything, and don't say anything either. Just enjoy your time with your family.
We ended our semester at winter break. Tell them you deserve the time off just as much as they do.
I will only listen to this Mom, smile 😃, and wish her a happy holiday… Or you can mention, your children/child and family will need you to give them your undivided attention over the Christmas holidays… 🙄
Call her 6 am on Christmas Day to discuss the grades. Make sure you over share.
Move on and don’t obsess over this. Don’t let it ruin your break. It sounds like your principal was just passing along the message. People create their own insane expectations. It doesn’t mean you have to be bothered by it.
How do you know the parent complained to Administration? Did an administrator tell you this? S/he should not have relayed this information to you, but instead should have told the parent that teachers are not expected to grade student work while on vacation. If I were you I would discuss this with my union rep.
No..you have earned your break. Spend time with family and friends because we get so little with them during the school year!
F*@k that. They can wait. Who cares they are mad. They are entitled to be mad just as you are entitled your time off.
Good Luck finding a job everyone.
Kindly your share your contracted number of days/hours etc. Then share a district calendar showing scheduled student/teacher days of work. Should be pretty self explanatory.
Yes be pissed off Next reply in a positive manner acknowledging the concern. Then do just as you mentioned If the student can not turn in work on time and the parent does not provide supervisor skills to the student and do their job as a parent then she /he can wait. I do not school work at home. Teaching is a 7:30 to 4:00 job for me that is what they pay me for. That my contract. I do a great job and have no complaints about my performance.
Our grading period ended Dec 16. My grading was final by the end of that day.
If they are in break and are not doing school work neither should you. My philosophy is I work during work hours. I don't get paid for doing work at home. That is my time.
