I moved to another city while on a local project. The client and my account leadership were fine with it. I was going to move whether they let me relocate or not because my boyfriend got a new job. My TFS had to do some special request because the initial one wasn't accepted. She basically said I would quit if they didn't let me move. They let me move
I transferred from NE office to West coast with my NE local project support. Get it in writing from your MD that they support the move and you should be fine. My TFS was not remotely involved, but it did take at least 3 months and HR dragged their feet. My MD made one phone call and it was approved in 5 min. Make sure to get the MD support and you're golden
@OP even better then. If. With TFS out of the picture, it can be dealt with the project/practice leads, which can be more beneficial to you. I've had many friends who were approved for relocation based on situations like this. But word of caution... Relocation must be approved by the office that will be taking you in as well, that's why it's harder to get into offices like Miami, where it's smaller and the location must be willing to accept another resource who might not bring value to local markets.
If you're important enough to the project and client says they need/want you and will pay the expenses, then a should be possible. It's all about leverage.
Nice, thanks to you both. Each point is fairly common sense and what I'm assuming, just encouraging to hear that echoed by others. My practice pretty much ignores our TFS and manages all assignments in-house, but our leads have the context in terms of my client's desire to keep me on for the next year+ (boring but great path for advancement)
Awesome, thanks again for sharing your stories and advice!
Definitely make sure your project is cool with it and/or have a few MDs that support you. Knowing an MD in the area you want to transfer helps too. Unfortunately the HR part of the process can be a pain. Also know that if its a voluntary move, highly doubtful that you'll get any reimbursement
