Every 2017-present MAS student portfolio idea ever:
[HIP, MILLENNIAL BRAND] partners with [CHARITY] to use [HIP, MILLENNIAL BRAND’S] unique angle to promote the cause of [CHARITY]. All wrapped together in a 2-minute case study with a VO done by someone from Fiverr.
@intern1 yeah student awards are nice but ultimately helps MAS’s slogan of “most awarded school” or “school with most awarded student” or whatever their slogan is.
You’re judged on the quality of your book, not on how many student awards you’ve won. So many candidates from MAS these days are lacking thinking and craft from their book. Your case study videos and random stunts do not demonstrate your thinking and how you work to your hiring managers
Unless you are non-US student and want to go the O1 route, in which case, rack up those awards.
/end rant
How did you know?
I definitely don’t need to see 3 print campaigns but holy hell dude... design some album covers or something. Show me your skills.
Or if you’re one of these “I’m an art director who doesn’t design” type dudez then how are you going to help me and my team?
Do they teach students it’s possible to be an AD without having to have the skills that make ADs desirable?
Or they are, but no one in their ad school teaches them about the power of brevity in presentation.
@ACD1 I hear that. At our agency, we have plenty of designers but are starved for conceptual thinkers. We’ve been looking for an art director partner for me for over a year now 😥
Let me guess. Miami Ad School student?
A forum speaker at The Creative Circus once told us that if you’re an art director who can’t design then you should be a copywriter. It really stuck with me
The sentiment back in my day was “if you have to explain it, it doesn’t work.”
Just look at Brandcenter portfolios.
I don’t even know what’s good anymore. CD’s new favorite way to kill work is to say it’s “just an ad” when did that stop being what we make? I get it the good ads shape culture and become more than ads but really at the end of the day we make ads to sell shit. We have to talk to people not ourselves
@SAD 1 it’s either getting worse or this is a really bad example but honestly just show me some simple shit that proves your abilities. I don’t care if it’s a tweet, a coffee cup or your T-shirt line. You know... normal art director stuff
In my experience it's harder to find good conceptual ADs. Most have the chops to comp whatever junior level briefs you throw at them.
That’s ridiculous. I went to MAS and my book was 45% campaigns (comped), 45% design, 10% other...
all case studies?? GTFO!
Hahaha if it needs a title slide, it doesn’t work.
And to think of the money Miami people are pocketing
We’re encouraged to win awards not make good campaigns. Kinda like you guys, amirite
Why are you hiring grads to be interns? Shouldn’t they be hired as juniors?
Well now I get why all the juniors cry all the time about not being able to find jobs... they’re not qualified
If it’s a truly big enough idea for a campaign then it should be pretty easy for a conceptual art director to come up with a decent print or OOH execution that shows some design skills
As a former instructor at one of the MAS offices it’s really hit or miss, some instructors phone or in and DGAF. Some of the intro concept courses don’t teach the fundamentals of conceptual thinking and it killed me.
The amount of writers that didn’t have headline driven campaigns killed me too. Where’s the distillation and craft?
Like step back, think, concept, And execute. Don’t make everything a goddamn video.
@Intern I get your meaning but ultimately I need to see SOME work in your book that proves you’ll be a helpful team member in a pinch. I need to know how smart you are but even at ECD level sometimes an ad is just an ad.
I certainly wouldn’t hire someone with an all print portfolio but I expect a reasonable balance.
