My experience has been (especially in retail) that raises are never that easy to come by, and usually much smaller than Cost of Living increases. The ONLY way to find success is to negotiate a fair starting salary.

Really, I just give them my current salary, salary history, and my request. And if they don't come up with a number that I can live with, we just part ways. No hard feelings. I mean, it's just business, and if it doesn't work for them, then it doesn't work.
But the downside is, you need options, because you want to be in a position where you don't need to work for them. One reason that my first rule is, always be interviewing.

I really want to do it for my next job because I’ve always hesitated to ask for a higher salary at the start. This time, I want to be more confident and advocate for what I truly deserve.
That’s the right mindset. Confidence goes a long way, especially when you know your worth. Going in prepared and clear about your value will make a big difference. What’s your plan for building that confidence?
I've never even though to negotiate offers. I'm always so desperate for the job that I'll accept just about anything. It sounds really uncomfortable to me, but I should probably try to move past that because I need every dollar I can get.
It’s way more common than you think to feel that way. But negotiating doesn’t have to be scary—think of it as just having a honest conversation about your value. Could be the difference between scraping by and thriving. What’s holding you back the most?
I like the idea of going in with the research and the receipts. I don't typically negotiate because most jobs I apply to have the salary listed and it just seems weird to try to negotiate when they posted the exact hourly amount to expect. Does that make sense or am I just being a baby about asking?
Makes total sense. When they put a number out there, it feels set in stone. But sometimes there’s wiggle room—especially if you bring solid reasons why you’re worth more. Worth testing the waters, no harm done. Have you ever tried asking just to see?
