Start looking while you’re still on this new account.
Hope your supervisor isn’t reading this
I was in your shoes last year... moved across the country for an agency that lost its keystone account two months in. Was offered a reassignment and I took it, which taught me the most important lesson I’ve learned in agencyland:
Don’t stay. You’ll be miserable if the role isn’t what you want. Sure, the agency will talk big talk about getting back on its feet and convincing you that you’ll be an integral part of its resurgence. But talk is cheap and change takes time. Everyone who’s still there is actively looking to jump ship, and you don’t want to be the last one standing in two months’ time. Advertising isn’t consequential enough to put up with being unhappy at work.
Find out where the account they lost is going and apply there.
@ACD1 thanks, I’m not too concerned and think I was vague enough 😬
Added context: I like the agency, but working in account means moving between clients is infrequent. The work on the new client is neither interesting nor fulfilling. Is the only move to leave the agency, and if so, will it burn bridges given the support I got to be kept around in the first place?
if BBDO, who has lost several major accounts this year, reach out to others you trust, while in Central Filing... and see if they can work you into other accounts.
The shitty thing is, if you are really good, they will put you on problem accounts for a while... but you won't stay for to long once it's fixed. Those guys move around a lot. Give it some time and in a year if you're still on a crap account, then start looking.
FYI — you can’t delete your own post but once you feel you have enough advise to work with you can “report it,” which will swipe it from the feeds
I think there’s a lot to consider. Weigh the pros and cons and do what you think is best for your career. For me, I stuck it out only to have the account I was moved to also move on from the agency. Even though the client was extremely difficult and ultimately left the agency, working at this particular agency ended up helping me get my current position and I’ve very happy.
If you are good at your job but your agency isn’t the best, they will keep losing accounts and you will keep moving from one crap account to another. It might be best to take control of your career and move to a better agency/account
I was there a couple months ago, start looking elsewhere ASAP
Update the resume and start making moves
You’ve said you don’t like the account and it’s perhaps neither fulfilling nor interesting, but is there something to learn on the account? Is there something that will build your resume or skills. If so, it might be something worth sticking out, THEN asking for a transfer or leaving down the road.
That said, the fact that they kept you and let others go is a testament to your hard work and the talent they see in you. But you don’t owe them for that. You obviously earned it. If you think leaving is the right thing to do, do it.
I would caution that some people in leadership could be ruffled a bit if they fought for you. Might not be fair, but sometimes happens. If you’re going to leave I would recommend keeping things positive (don’t bitch to your coworkers too much about how the account sucks), give a full two weeks and do what it takes to leave there on good terms. This industry is smaller than you think. Keep those bridges.
CW1 - that happened to me, almost exactly, about a decade ago. I did get some good work out of accounts I wasn’t excited about... but it still was not the job I’d moved for.
