Kids, if you need a definition of “out of touch”, EY’s leader is here to help.

Of course the younger generation wants to be in. Imagine going from a 4 year college where you party with 500 people every day to a 500sq ft nyc apartment where you make slides 8-11.

Our industry is fun because of the perks. Wfh is not a perk to an analyst

Location matters a lot as well. At our firm most A/SA in NYC go to the office, however in Chicago most do not.

like

Absolutely! The Philadelphia office is truly an embarrassment and the worst location I’ve ever worked in over a 20yr career — people are on top of each other due to limited space (not enough when limited people come in let alone when more come in) and absolutely does not support productivity (poor tech resources in rooms). Sad experience. Plus an hr commute each way with traffic - an occasional visit with a real reason to be there (leadership in, intentional group events/activities/learning events…) - yes. The way we use face to face space must change. I don’t see us leading the way here y just saying “come to the office and meet up” - it really doesn’t make sense. Except in the amazing 1MW office where I’ve heard it has been thoughtfully designed but even they are still “learning”.

like

Idk…whenever I do go into the office, the majority of the people there are younger/newer.

I think most of us love certain aspects of going to the office, like working in the same room and having discussions about stuff other than the client, having lunch together, discussing client situations as a team, and the social aspects like happy hours. I find that a couple of days at clients or in the office and a couple of days at home is best for me. I didn't miss commuting, but I did miss the interaction. I'm fine splitting time between together and being at home and intend to do exactly that for as long as I can.

As a youngin, I’d love to be in the office, don’t know anyone outside of my immediate team.. joining ALL the local office communities

I think companies should offer work from where you are most productive whenever possible. Office, home, foreign country. We expect you to be available during business hours which are x-x. Your internet has to be able to support 20mbps with 99.9% uptime. This company will get the best talent. Why debate it? Some people flourish in a social environment. Some people can’t concentrate with all the distractions. Personally I can write email, present, make relationships in an office. I find coding or anything that requires deep concentration extremely difficult in a cube farm. If I’m in an office I’m trying to find any quiet place I can if I need to concentrate. This approach helps everyone. Who doesn’t want less traffic, more parking?

like

The newer/younger workers have more to lose by not coming into the office. Out of sight, out of mind.

I also hear of those A/SA having trouble getting staffed. I bet if they spent or continue spending time in the office they’d get in the mix on some work or BD and onto other projects. That is given they do a good job.

like

They can go into the office all they want but no one else is there…

So they’ll be working from corporate BS clothes in an open office vs the comfort of their home

like

Not wrong.

It’s a balancing act between the unpleasantness of in-office social assimilation or wfh social isolation.

I prefer social isolation. 😹

like

Define “younger generation”

It depends how social your team is. I have a good group of people I like to see and I enjoy speaking to the high-ups in my team. Can’t really do any of that as easily stuck in my flat. So yeah - office is better and most of us junior people feel the same way.

Want to be in the office or travel 🤔🤔

I wish I can find it right now but some study was done stating the order of preference for remote work by generations is 1. millennials 2. Gen Z 3. Baby Boomers 4. Gen X so its not as clear cut. I am guessing Gen Z are still in their post college sociable phase and baby boomers are more likely to have covid concerns vs gen x because of their age

WFH has not worked for me as 3/4 of my day are spent on meetings

Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with discrimination as an Asian in the workplace? In my company it seems like it’s a white boys club where and they just promote white ppl because they’re white. And then they have a lower bar for promotions for minorities (traditional minorities likes Hispanics and African Americans). Meanwhile they make Asians do all the work. I am not generalizing that this is how it is everywhere but it definitely is that way in my workplace. Any advice?
