All this talk about quitting your day job, gaining freedom, start ups, etc. Does anyone actually know someone who quit consulting and was able to make it on their own?

David Haywood from Lady Antebellum. Was a friend of mine at UGA and went to work for Protiviti in Atlanta. Left a year or so later to go to Nashville to try and make it. And did.

I also assumed we are in this business cause we cant do the 9-5 monotonous job yet dont have the entrepreneurial flame. Flexibility vs risk

Seen about 3 people try with varying success. But they all came back eventually

Also the older Directors all seem to have a "secret plan" to build a network south clients & then retire into a million dollar business. Yet to see that one work too

I know one guy who is 2.5 years into what's looking like a successful start up he founded and runs after leaving consulting

like

No. Most of my peers, myself included, are comfortable and don’t have the guts to do that. Not to mention the lack of entrepreneurial spirit.

like

Two people, they both seem happier with their startups. Consulting wasn’t really working for them

like

All my colleagues that have left have never came back. Either they went to a competing firm, industry, independent or started their own companies. The latter 2 are successful and leveraged their experiences and knowledge from consulting.

A1, no such thing as 9-5 anymore and hohum is not how I'd describe my new lucrative role outside of consulting. Stop drinking the koolaid, gain some more experience and business maturity... then cross over and see if your comment is still true :-). Theres fear jumping off the hamster wheel but totally worth it for those with entrepreneur spirit .... fyi, if you're going to do a start up, do it before you have serious relationship or family. It's going to be your master/mistress 24/7 lord for quite a while. My prof from EMBA program with years of Silicon VC years of success bid our class adieu with ... "congratulations, you're entering a life filled with potential divorces, lonely nights, but if you're passionate, now is your time."

I did it! I got an in-house Paralegal position after years of working and being burned out at different law firms. I was going to leave the legal field all together because I was so burned out and depressed, but I decided to give the field one more chance if I was able to go in-house. Prayerfully, this transition will be a good one.

I feel like every company lies about “working your way up.” You’re never allowed to blatantly say that you don’t like your position and you’d like to transition to HR or Finance. It’s almost as if once you get in claims, you’re stuck.
