Alright everyone: what's a financial resolution that you would make if you knew you'd keep it? For me, it would be to put extra money into my balance or credit cards. I won't make that resolution though, because I won't keep it.

Put money into savings and pay down credit card debt and not take on any more debt unless necessary.

I might be able to put money in savings and pay down CCs but then I use the CCs instead of cash so my balance goes back up.

My issue is if I have easy access to my money it gets spent. All my bills and minimum payments get paid but then I end up spending the extra on things I don’t need instead of saving.

I’m paying down my cc debt . With the interest rates so crazy it’s something I must do!

I'd like to save the most money I've ever saved this year. I want to max out our retirement, start an education fund for my son, and save for a long vacation this summer.

I’d spend less money on “entertainment”. Looking at my expenses for 2023, I spent a lot on dining out and going out in general. I won’t keep it though because that keeps my sanity!

No spending on extras, like clothes.
I have a friend who went all of 2023 without buying any new clothes. Zero.
There's no way I could do that. I'm a sucker for athletic wear and sneakers.

Currently 25 years old.
Goals:
* Own a home in a HCOL
* 2 kids (eventually)
* Retire at 50 on $125k/year.

Envelope math:
* $125k/year would require an investment portfolio of ~$3M.
* Targeting a $2M home (split with partner)
* 2 kids - $1M to raise both (including college fund, split with partner)
* $500K buffer for unexpected expenses
* 33% tax

Therefore, 6.5-7M retirement savings needed. To hit this (assuming 6% return after inflation), I’d need to save ~$110k/year.

How does this sound?

I NEED HELP WITH CREDIT SCORE issues: Two months ago my credit score went down by 30 to 40 points due to dad missing credit card payment by a day (i got added to as authorized user on his credit card for me to build credit but now I’m filled with regret). I was devastated by it. This past month I have been making more payments and paid off my aug statement in full thinking it will boost my credit score. But I don’t know why it went down another 10 points. More below:

Amex Gold or Chase sapphire preferred? I'm trying to decided what credit card to get. Let me add, I'll get $150 statement credit since I have an amex card with my job.

Currently 25 y/o making 70k/year in Boston. I grew up pretty poor and I have minimal financial education. A lot of my salary now goes towards helping my parents get out of debt. My parents are no longer able to live on their own, so considering selling my grandmas house where they live (maybe 550k), paying off their mortgage (100k) and buying a duplex (between them they make about 55k/year). Is buying a two family home a good investment ? How much can I afford to spend on a new house?

Has anyone successfully “ported” their mortgage? Just learned about this and doing some research since rates are so high now. Current rate is 3% and new home will be more expensive, for context.

I’m seeing lots of posts about really bad losses. If you trade you’re going to lose money - hopefully not all the time, but many positions will be mistakes. But you need a process to find ideas and manage positions. Two books you should read are “The New Trading for a Livinng” and “The Laws of Trading.” Both look at psychology, process, and risk in different ways that can help you work out your own process. The next 18 months will be much harder than the last 18 - time to start learning.
