Alright folks what’s actually the deal with the job market right now, specifically in finance and accounting? I’ve been hearing two different things, positive and negative. For those who left public accounting how long did it take you to land your current role? It doesn’t make sense to me why companies would waste their resources putting a candidate through interviews just for them not to extend an offer

My 2 cents as someone in industry now. Market is fine. Lots of opportunities out there. The problem is they're not overly enticing.

Candidates want big pay raises and/or less hours to jump. Most companies, including mine, are sharing salary data with competitors so they're all generally paying the same. After the COVID pay raises in public, it's also much harder to get that 30% increase to switch to industry.

Hence people complain that the market "sucks" because they can't find a job that will pay them what they want, or is remote, or whatever it is they want, and if they can, there's 35 other candidates fighting for it.

Hate to say it but companies hold the power right now. There will always be someone to take the job with average pay and in office time because others are getting laid off. It's just different from when people like me started our careers and 100% dictated the pay and terms when switching. FWIW I'm 33 and a director now. Most jobs I see want me to do 2x the work for maybe 5-10k more.

If I can paraphrase you: it’s not that the market sucks, it’s that public is finally paying market.

Took a few months and many interviews until I was extended an offer with over a 50% increase. People like blaming the market, but there are many other reasons like perceived compatibility, relatability, lack of interview skills, etc.

I mostly agree with Audit Manager, I bounced to a different employer for a raise and was recruited to do so.
We have openings but with decent salary and remote we can be picky. Plus, my colleagues are using our network to fill. We need people we can trust so, if they are looking, they are going to get the role.

it took me about 60days

It only took 2 weeks for me. Small companies like to hire end of year

Need advice in choosing between 2 offers :
Company 1 : $170k base + 10% bonus + 136k rsu + 5k sign on
Cons : junior title\level, hybrid

Company 2 : $150k base + 10% bonus
Pros : senior role\title, fully remote

Would you go for junior role for high salary? Would it hurt in future?

Current: unemployed.
Location: Bay Area
Thanks in advance.

Boomer. I am in between jobs. Laid off in 10/21 after 16+ yrs, with an ABA firm. RIF. Still on excellent terms. Took my time living off generous package and didn’t seriously start applying until 01/22. Made a rookie mistake and accepted first offer.
Turns out job wasn’t as advertised. Mutual parting of ways 3/22. Due diligence is critical.
Now interviewing a LOT. Some temp work, I still have “it”. I relate to all gens. Willing to mentor AND learn from all. Tech savvy, CTE from day one. Leads?

Mid 2020, I turned down an opportunity to jump ship from my small law firm to a big law firm. At the time I had 4 years of practice under my belt with managerial experience. I thought the offer was reasonable, come in at a 2nd year level, but with the uncertainty of the times I played it safe. Now I regret it. What avenues do I have, if any, to jump into big law from a small firm?

Has anyone found roles in Big 4 or industry that allowed more work life balance when their kids were young without damaging future career trajectory? I'm a partner with young kids and feel like I'm missing out on too much of their lives. Wishful, but my dream job would have a lighter workload in terms of time and pressure for the next ~5 years, but not set me back too much (or at all) when the kids are older and tired of me in a few years and I'm ready to be back at work full force.

Received offer from BCG for ECT AD role. Read numerous comments about ECT being not attractive compared to Generalists track. Also heard challenges about billability/utilization. Any views/guidance is appreciated.

Background - I am not super keen to become an equity partner and comfortable to stay on ECT track. Main reason to join will be opportunity to work with different clients, smart talented people and good brand. I may consider going back to industry after 3-5 years in ECT.
