I literally became an NP mainly for this issue. I worked at the bedside as an ICU nurse for 19 years, and my body was broken. I had 3 back surgeries from herniated discs, inflammatory markers through the roof, terrible lower extremity edema, weight gain, and bad eating habits. I didn’t want to, but I finally had to step away. Now that I work in an outpatient clinical setting with no call, predictable hours, an actual lunch break, the ability to sit down when needed, my health has improved dramatically. I lost over 100 pounds, normalized all of my inflammatory markers, got control over my iron deficiency, am able to have a normal sleep schedule, and overall just more time to take care of myself. My job isn’t glamorous and is can be very stressful mentally and is documentation heavy. However, I still help a lot of people and have finally (mostly) come to terms with the fact that I don’t have to be in the midst of ICU chaos to help others. My body definitely thanks me for that!
Take care of your body first-
Perhaps look into being a ‘wellness nurse’ =
Working at Vaccination Clinics. They usually are only for 4-5 hr. Involve no heavy
lifting-physical strain. Are not daily, but will
give you some income till….
That sounds like a great idea! Thank you. I’m going to look into that!
Informatics is very competitive and you really need to put the work in in order to get a job. Having a masters degree alone won’t help. Are you going to be getting another job? You’ll need to get involved in EHR projects (become super user etc) because this is one the main questions they ask in interviews. Hope you feel better soon and good luck!
That is very good to know!! I think I’ll focus on researching this for the month of November. That way I could possibly see who would best for me and work towards networking with individuals within the field at that company via LinkedIn to get a little more insight.
Is the program somewhat flexible for you to take? I definitely believe in having positive things to focus your mind on if you have health issues. The concern is that you don’t want it to be a source of stress.
That makes sense. Going through Capella’s flex path for that reason. I don’t want it to be too rigid to the point that it’s stressing me out. What are your thoughts on Capella?
