Your PTO is part of your compensation package and how you use it is absolutely none of your manager’s business.
After three months, she would not have PTO. If she did, it would only be a couple of hours.
I got a verbal warning after using 3 sick days to take care of my sick kid. Literally one of the top people came and said I gotta give you a verbal warning cause you called off 3 days in a 12 week period. But I used my sick time and it was approved. I'm still floored. Companies offer time off then get mad when you use it.
Same thing happened to me years ago, but I foolishly used my vacation time because I felt guilty calling off sick for my child.
That is your right as an employee to do this and if you asked off way in advance they have plenty of time to plan around it. Remember we are all human and have priorities and responsibilities. Children are just that. If it continues politely say I request off plenty in advance for this day and it was approved. If they still harass you use the chain of command and make a formal complaint.
I'm always amazed by companies who advertise as making sure their employees, "enjoy a remarkable work/life balance." Ah, yeah. Sure. Right. Until it comes to being real. Then, not really.
I'm disabled and was hired to work Monday Tuesday and Friday and when I'm off on Wednesdays and Thursdays my coworkers act like I'm out having a party when that's the days I schedule my Dr, dentist, psych appointments etc and they act like I am just having vacation days every week
Thankyou for sharing that. My director actually said someone said that it seems as though I'm allowed to just come and go as I please
Where I work, we don’t get sick days or PTO. I’m not used to that. I have some health issues and kids. But, family and taking care of myself come first. So far I haven’t taken any days off and we work holidays also, but if I need to they shouldn’t have an issue with it.
Is there and HR in your company that you trust? We could not trust ours, but we could trust the compliance officer. They help when supervisors or upper management behave in ways that are unethical, or against any policy.
Those times when I have been a manager I felt it was absolutely not my business as to why a staff person was taking time off. Although many would volunteer why they wanted the time but that was just not my business IMHO
