Considering taking a position with a small-cap in the US trying to build their legal department. The title is standard “counsel” although the work would be with the senior leadership team and reporting to the GC in Europe. How reasonable is it to ask for a bump in title - Senior counsel or Head of Legal, US? I’m talking routine low value and risk contracts (e.g., vendor services), where Legal terms won’t kill the deal. My clients blindly forward contracts. Would you strongly advise against going in-house right after a state court clerkship? (No law firm experience in law school either). I don’t know if I want to become an in-house forever. Would it be difficult to get a law firm job at a later time?

Hello, hoping for some input on how to time a job change. At a startup - we are doing well now but unless we have complete turnover in management I don’t think we have a bright future post-COVID. I could coast here 1-2 years before having to look. I’ve been here for a little under a year. This is my second in house job after 10 years at the same firm. The market is hot now, probably won’t be in 1-2 years and I am getting interest for good roles. OTOH I don’t want to look like a job hopper.

What would be a typical salary for a junior in house counsel role (3 yoe) at a publicly traded company in a secondary market (think Austin, Tampa, Charlotte)? I’m having a really hard time finding what a reasonable range would be. Most positions I’m applying to require desired salary in the application, and the truth is I’d accept anything north of 125k but don’t want to undersell myself and take a bigger cut than necessary coming from biglaw.

What’s a fair expectation for my first raise? Publicly traded co with ~2500 employees. I’ve been doing litigation with the company for almost 3 yrs and have only had a 2% cost of living raise so far. Graduated in 2014. Base comp is $127.5k in the Philly area. I see salaries all over the place in this site and it’s hard to tell whether mine is competitive.

I have practiced for five years and make $121k as an employee of a financial services company. As the only attorney, I oversee all statewide collections efforts, from demand letter to garnishment, with a case volume of nearly 7k new cases per year, of which the majority I end up litigating. I receive only a $1k bonus per year. Is my compensation fair? My last insurance defense gig was $75k.
