Tax attorney here. I started as general (state and local, some controversy, mainly m&a) and now I mostly stick to deal work. You have to like puzzles with highly technical answers. frequently, the answers change on small factors. Once you get down the road in tax it’s unclear on how difficult it is to lateral to something else if you don’t like it, but it’s definitely possible. People that stay in it have good job security. Generally, tax partners are service partners so you’d have to decide if that’s something you’d want as well.

A partner that (generally) does not have their own clients. Their “clients” are the other practice groups of the firm.
Tax can be challenging with new issues every day. Less hours and higher billable rates than other areas. Tax law changes with each administration. Take a tax course to see if the topic is interesting. If you don’t like it, you may pigeonhole yourself.
It will really depends on what type of firm you’re planning to work for. Tax work can be a mix of controversy, transactional and counseling or it can be focus on any one of those areas. Similarly, you can focus on international, state and local or estate planning. Some boutique places will focus on tax incentives. Overall, it can be challenging work that allows junior attorneys a chance to shine as new tax legislation or regulations appear (which happens often). Generally, you tend to keep better hours than the M&A group. Also, unlike most of corporate work, it’s not strongly correlated with the business cycle.
I have worked as a transactional tax attorney at a big 4, a small firm, a mid size firm, and now a V10. Happy to answer any questions.
what is a V10?
