I plan around their sleep
Same. Even if that means tweaking a bit their routine.
An iPad and headphones. We have made a few long road trips (10 hrs drive) to my parents and it helps a lot. My daughter is 3.5 now but she has been doing it a few times a year her whole life. We also go to our lake house which is 3.5 hours.
We also have a small purse of random toys and stickers she can go through and play with.
We also have a “rule of a road-trip” which is every time we stop at a gas station she gets to pick a snack. Endless snacks helps
Hitting the road first thing in the morning works best for us - like load the car before they’re awake, get the kiddo up and start driving so that they orient accordingly. They’ll usually still conk out around nap time which is helpful on longer drives.
Depending on how old the kiddo is, iPad/movies can be clutch, but even with all this planning they’re still babies with opinions, and limited means of expressing them. Gods speed
Benadryl or chloroform..:I mean hugs and kisses

Activities (especially something new) and snacks. Drawing boards are great: https://www.amazon.com/KOKODI-Colorful-Erasable-Electronic-Educational/dp/B082KFTF41/ref=sr_1_3?crid=21WRN00K4HL00&keywords=cleaning+drawing+board+toy&qid=1678984109&sprefix=cleaning+drawing+board+%2Caps%2C1626&sr=8-3
We would just keep a bunch of different toys, activities, books, etc. Also, if there is music they like (Disney music, for example), play it. Give them choices and let them choose. Or on Spotify or elsewhere I'm sure, you can download Disney stories that are read aloud.
Anything that'll distract them and hopefully grab their attention.
Lots of fun toys (at least some that they haven't played with in a while /new) and lots of snacks! And definitely useful to plan around their nap times.
We give our 2.5yo kid something to draw on and he enjoys it. He also keeps busy with his dino toys.
We also keep talking to him and singing rhymes together. We take regular breaks and keep his juicebox/milk and snacks handy. He also enjoys looking outside at things in general
How old?
3.5 hours isn’t too bad for toddlers. We have a 1 yr old and an almost 3 yr old. They are very active and high energy.
However, My kids sleep and look out the windows so they’re pretty good in the car. Key is to stop halfway through for bathroom break and either go first things after breakfast or at afternoon nap time.
If they ride in the car a lot already - daycare, play dates, Costco runs, etc. they should be ok.
Busy book helped us
iPads, audio books and snacks. Stopping at playgrounds along the way is also good as it gives them a non digital thing to look forward to.
Audio books - also we’ve planned drives around sleep times - like starting late evening post dinner

Make sure you stop every chance you get to refresh, it can be too tiring for a kid to be stationary for hours
