Anyone else been WFH so long at this point you're not sure if you could even function in an office environment anymore?

I started working at a big name agency in 1995. I had my own private office. We had big desktop computers but mainly used them to type memos we then printed out and distributed via inter office mail. No mobile no email. Just big old desk phone that took messages. When we walked out the door end of day that was it. Done and no communication until you’re back in office. No emails. No dm, no slack , no teams.

We had lots of in person meetings and conference calls. We had couches & mini fridges in our private offices. Even very junior people had a fairly large, private cube.

Now, all day for me it’s a series of teams calls with people in other cities, other countries.

like

It’s not about clients in other cities and people working in other countries brought into meetings remotely. That was happening right before COVID. It’s the fact that so many people have moved outside of commuting range (but still in the US) during COVID and now can only be in daily meetings remotely.

I’m a shell of a human and about ready to try to get a job at a grocery store

like

Over the course of 30 years, I commuted and worked in my own office, then shared an office, then had to move into open spaces in cubicles, then sat at a picnic table with 7 other people, now FT WFH. I could go back to FT commuting for sure, but only because I genuinely like people in advertising. But as I’ve said many times, if I go into the office now it’s because I would have nothing to do but attend meetings. Any actual work would take me much longer with all the (mostly) pleasant distractions.

like

I don't mind coming into the office as long as there's a reason for it. If I'm going to be staring at the screen or working solo for the majority of the day, then I might as well have stayed home in a more comfortable environment and have my meetings virtually.

like

I would have a hard time going back in office every day. I am so much happier at home. I go in one day a week bc I want to and enjoy it.

like

I like that I can take power naps at home as needed, but I have to say it's nice to actually be around my team at the office once a week. I'm an extrovert so the pandemic, and its lingering effect of most people defaulting to not going out, feels like jail.

like

A good way to ease into it is a hybrid role to step onsite a couple days a week.

like

WFH should be a bowl and members should organize in person meet ups in their cities if feasible. It’s very lonely working from home and after a while you start to doubt your ability to properly socialize in a business setting.

like

I totally agree with this. I get up in the morning get ready and walk from my bedroom to my office where I basically sit at my desk from 7:30 when my wife and daughter both leave the house until about 5:30. The whole day, I'm just interacting with a computer screen. I liked it at first, but after 4 years, I'm over it. I don't think we're born to not have human contact all day.

like

As a junior id be hybrid or work in office to get mentored, network, and learn. As a mid to senior, wfh to get stuff done fast, take care of my outie life. Productivity makes me very happy.

See people in IRL when I set it up. And celebrations are cool to see people let their hair down.

Ive been fluctuating between coworking spaces and WFH on and off for the past 8 years. But in total ive spent about 12 years working from home, out of 20 years. You do feel out of the loop and absent from the world indeed. It might help to hot desk at a wework type place a day or two a week… meet new faces etc

I'm a WFH goblin with severe ADHD and a touch of agoraphobia. I get my work done quickly and well at home. When I'm in the office I get very little done and my social battery is drained by lunch.

Colleague has put in his resignation. They are offering him whatever he wants to stay including 4days a week work from home. He’s not bluffing and plans to leave. However, at this same time I was asked to begin working as a supervisor for the engineering team and I would get a promotion at the beginning of the year. I have been supervising and managing our team of 6 for months with no extra pay or bonuses. I was told yesterday that raises will be light this year. Yet today they spare nothing.
