Anyone ever interview for an offer in effort to just have your current employer counter and give you a raise?

No. If you have to work that hard for the raise, you might as well just leave anyway for a better offer.

likehelpful

Yes, but it was because my boss expressly told me it was the only way she could get me a raise and promo due to a global freeze. Worked! Stayed another 2 years

likesmart

It only works if your current employer truly needs you.

And I still ended up leaving after 10 months. Money didn't fix the underlying issues and concerns I expressed for years leading up to my departure.

like

Yes. Did this many times over the years and in the end, I realized that once you are done, you are done.

likesmart

Over the years, I’ve advised my boss to turn these down (ignored me). Always, always, always the person ends up leaving 6 months later anyway (as I predicted) or demands another promotion.

Then, when I became the boss, I turned them down flatly every time. Never regretted it, and usually after one person pulls it and fails the others never do.

like

I pulled it off once in the past. It’s really the only way to make a large salary adjustment when your agency is run by a large corporate parent. However, it’s no guarantee, so only do it if you’re fully prepared to jump ship and accept the new offer if you don’t get the counter you need.

likesmart

Doing that right now, will keep you posted

like

Why would you even need to actually interview to do that? You can literally just lie and say you did.

like

Because at many places, having a counter for leverage is the only way to get that raise.

like

My situation: really enjoy everything about my job, my boss rocks, work is challenging, engaging, etc....just underpaid by probably 30-35%. I brought up my pay a while ago and they said they’re working on it but I work for one of the big holding companies that has all the red tape and bureaucracy. And I think having an offer would get me a higher salary then what they’d get for me otherwise.

like

I’m really sorry to tell you: there’s a serious chance it won’t.

Go get the new job and leave on great terms. Come back to your boss in 18 months

likesmart

Yes. Was offered two titles up and almost double the money in another city. I got a title bump and huge raise and styled put in the city I preferred. Win win.

like

Important caveat: if I didn’t get the counter offer, I was 100% ready to take the new job and move cities.

like

Accepting counter offers almost never end well. I say if you have to do it, only do it once in your career, late into your career, when you can eek out a MUCH higher title and salary bump giving your career a huge tailwind.

I won’t counter unless desperate to keep you, and even then know you’ll be gone in 6 months because a counter is a short term band aid to your bigger issue. 95% of the time I won’t counter based on principle. When word gets out you were countered (and it always does) it pisses off everyone else. Nah.

Sounds like you have a serious problem with your culture.

Coming out of UG, I accepted my first job b/c I thought I had to based on status of other interviews. I ended up quitting after 8 weeks in favor of an opportunity I perceived to be better, but took longer to get. 7 months into the new gig, I am NOT happy. Considering this is technically my second job out of school, how long should I stick around before trying to leave without looking like a total scumbag opportunist?

My company historically paid base comp and bonus based on years out of law school. Level 1 is 1-9, and Level 2 is 10+. Diff if $50k+, easily. My team’s work isn’t distributed any differently based on seniority, and we’re all doing the same subject matter. We have a new GC changing it so bonus can be higher (but not lower) if you take on more work.

Do you think this is a fair system? Is it right to push for equal comp, especially given that there’s a new reward system for doing more work?

Hi everyone,

I was affected by layoffs about a month ago and urgently looking for a good immigration lawyer. The lawyer should be experienced in handling this 60 day grace period situation and developing alternate strategies - such as change of status to B1/B2 or applying to jobs from India. There is a lot of noise and wrong information going in the market so looking for good recommendations.

I have very little time left for my grace period to end and need a consultation soon. Thanks

I remember when I first started working on my thesis project. My adviser asked me to get some funding for it, but he didn't give me any advice about how to do that. He just told me that if I wanted money for my project, I'd have to go through some kind of committee process and submit an application for funding from them. Sure enough, after weeks of writing applications and waiting around for responses from the committee members (who were always too busy), I eventually got approved for funding!
