Hi guys, Now VMware is offering me a 35% percent hike of what I am earning at DellEmc. I just completed one year at DellEmc. Total 2.7YOE But I don't like to go out of Dell, due to some personal commitments I am planning to switch.
Is it a good time to switch?

Got a random email from a supposed Amazon recruiter for a SDE position (which is not at all a fit). The email is amazon.com domain and there are no red flags in the body but it doesn't feel like an Amazon recruiter due to the tacky signature, etc. Has anyone seen this kind of cold-calling from FAANG recruiter?

1. Always be applying ... You can test your salary requirements.
2. Once you know what you can get and what will make you happy to a point you'll never second guess accepting the job, confidently provide your extreme anchor.
3. The recruiter will always want to negotiate down so don't go in with some median amount you *might* be ok with.
4. Be open to non-cash comp if it's reputable and doesn't have a ridiculous vesting period or isn't funny money "equity" that you don't get a dividend on.

Oh right I had one industry offer I didn't accept flip out like that... They gotta accept that's a possibility!
Go in prepared to talk about market data. What does x role typically pay for in someone in x location with x YoE and x certs. Use LinkedIn and Glassdoor.
Most important, know your worth and that recruiting is expensive so if you’ve made it this far they probably want you. Stand your ground and be prepared to walk things don’t work out. Be polite, fair, and do not show any hesitation in your answer.
Yea, stick to facts and sources (instead of figures). Only use percentage and rates. Try to avoid salary figures as much as possible and do some research online. There are plenty of tips and draft letters that will inspire you.
And most on top, don’t bring in private topics/matters such as debt, mortgage and so on. There is one exception tho, I consider debt due to a MBA program when u just graduated a valid reason to state since this is directly related to employers return on investment over time.
Lastly, before starting negotiations, consider the cultural environment u are in. Negotiations in east Asia will be different than in western countries.
Wish u all the best
Start by working to figure out the general target or range - if you have friends in HR/Recruiting they know this info, and even if they are at a different company their context could be helpful.
Then you'll want to figure out what is flexible and what is not; for example some companies will negotiate equity and not bonuses whereas others might be the opposite. It is also important to understand how real these variable items are, so for example if the bonus never pays in full or the RSUs take forever to vest then you will want to weigh them accordingly.
Always make sure you express excitement and gratitude throughout the negotiation when pushing back. Make it a partnership and not a battle. "I am very excited about this opportunity and hope we can get the compensation packaged aligned so we can move forward" - things like that.
Is it better to negotiate through the recruiter (who already has a relationship with the firm) or with the hiring manager/MD directly?
