Go in-house somewhere. Starting late and trying to be seen as valuable after 40 is almost impossible. Starting young and being seen as valuable after 40 is almost impossible. The ad industry sucks.
Or create your own awesome shot, get that publicity and let them come to you.
I don’t enjoy freelance. Looking for full time. I’ve freelanced a bunch and my book has suffered from the lack of interesting work
That’s the problem with freelance. And too much full time. I average one book-worthy project a year when FT. Maybe one every two when freelancing (for a living). I get where you’re coming from
Freeelance! Got into the biz when I was 35 and have been freelance every year but one. Now 49. Do good work fast and network like crazy.
Inspiring - and the only way, you’ll age out of FT roles by mid 40s unless you’re on the executive floor. Stupid industry really.
What were you doing before you got into art direction? If you want to get into an agency you may find alternate roles that can utilize your experiences and skills. You’ll need to be innovative and create a non-traditional path. If that is not for you, widen your search. Art direction and concept work is a different kind of beast in an agency than working in-house at a client doing layout design. Talk to people about what they think is appropriate for who you are.
I haven’t worked in freelance in almost a decade. Is there a good place to see what’s available ?
