I used to do valuation before switching to a more consulting roll in TAS. Its definitely a more technical focus. While it can be more interesting, I think it would be tough for me to be a middle office function again. You never travel and you juggling a ton of clients (including Audit clients). I think the pay is better than advisory, but I am unsure of that. I know people who have moved to boutique banks/PE as well as middle office functions as BB banks. Offhand, I don't know anyone that has moved to front office at a BB, though I'm sure there must have been one.
Valuation is unique regarding exit ops, you can exit a lot of ways if you network well, but there is no clear path. You develop a great skill set that is very useful, could get you a CorpDev role or mid tier IB if you network well. Also know of a few folks who got into M7 with the valuation background.
Also, practices vary by firm, I travel 75-80% of the time and do very little audit work.
