I did the opposite, SWE to IB
Hey. Can you kindly give any tips on how did you made this switch? Looking for some tips for making a switch. Thank you.
I did the opposite. IB is more interesting, but I have to say with a very technical skill set people are less likely to be promoted cuz you have to play politics, be corporate and it’s annoying. Eventually went into consulting and it’s been the best out of 3 so far
I made the switch from Quantitative Trader at a hedge fund to IB, haven’t heard of IB to SWE though since the time constraints of learning code while working might be difficult unless you have a background already.
Changed it up, the hedge fund I worked at had $1billion AUM L/S Strats and it was pretty toxic (if we didn’t hit P/L some of my coworkers would just get axed and it was high pressure). Imagine just walking into work one day and seeing your coworker get canned or that day might be your last. Coding all day and doing mathematic models was boring also.
Pay was good and the bonuses were great since we outperformed benchmarks by a huge margin in 2022 but there was no job stability.
Just turned 24 so I wanted to see if IB would interest me since all my friends were in IB and it sounded cool.
Have a few friends who did this and talked to numerous people that did. Usually driven by sweatshop culture at their banks and wanting to get out. Haven’t met a single person that regretted the switch.

I’d be shocked if anyone in IB made that switch because going into SWE takes a significant amount of discipline training and intelligence that isn’t required in IB. Moreover a lot of the well paying SWE jobs expect a masters on top of a four year bachelors.
I feel IB is just built for those who can’t make it into those occupations that require mental rigor. So thus it serves to be the best paying non-technical role out there (unless you count DCF building as “technical”)

Lol this is so wrong that it’s funny 😂
I really don’t understand how people manage these switches. How do you work in IB and have time to get good enough at coding to land a SWE worth switching to?
When you learn to stop using your mouse.
😅I’m just kidding.
