Anyone work for an internal consulting/strategy shop at a health insurance company? I’m starting to think about making a move and wanted to see what the work is like, as well as the pay and hours.

Currently a 3rd year Manager at Deloitte and pushing to go up for SM this year, but unlikely to happen due to COVID.

No, but I did intern at a very large health insurance company that employed multiple boutique consulting firms in DC. Those people were paid ridiculous amounts of money for giving the exact same answer that me, the 23 year old intern in grad school, gave.

So my impression was those boutique health consulting jobs are cushy and not particularly stressful. You just have to have an above-average knowledge of statistics, economics, policy, and statute/regulation.

I know that's not a particularly helpful answer, but it's what I got. 😁

I worked in internal consulting for a large integrated healthcare system prior to Deloitte. Hours were about 30-35/week, projects moved at a glacial pace, pay was about 30% lower than external consulting at junior levels (probably higher discrepancy in comp at more senior levels). I’ve always thought I would go back if I were a primary caregiver for my children or if I burned out at Deloitte, though after being in external consulting I’m not sure I could go back to that sloooow pace of work. I’m sure your experience would vary depending on the organization and department.

Thanks D1, I really appreciate all of this info! I’d happily take $150k base at 30-35 hours/week and jump ship.

What’s the best way to turn down a 2nd interview? During the 1st interview, I learned that the compensation for the role is not within the range that I am looking for and requires 400 more billable hours a year than what I bill now. I’d basically be laterally for my current salary just to bill 400 more hours. I also wasn’t aware that the local office was strictly ID. Firm website advertises lots of practice areas. Any advice? TIA!

Got an offer for SE III at a large tech company. Product I'd be working on interests me and I think I could grow more than in my current role.

Currently I make 180k base and have ISO/RSUs @ startup (60k/yr worth on paper, but won't be worth anything for a few years, if at all).

The offer is:
Base: $166,500
Target Bonus: 10% ($16,650)
RSU: 120k total (30k/yr)

Thoughts on offer? Should I counter?

Additionally there's a yearly target RSU bonus about equal to the cash bonus. Thoughts? 4.5 YOE

Morning everyone!

I’m currently working on employee data set and business wants to figure out the employee shift type based on number of working hour and days worked and categorize into 8*5 (8 hours 5 days) or (10 hours 4 days) a week. But the real challenge is employee hours are varying because of their overtime work and other reasons so it ranges from 0-20 and also employee can start his shift any day in a week.

So any ideas or suggestions on solving this to find shif type accurately?

Are firms willing to negotiate the role with campus hires? I received an offer for a big 4 in risk, which I signed early in September, but just now received another offer in TAS from a different firm. While I much prefer the big 4 firm, I do not want to work in risk anymore. Would a big 4 be willing to change groups? Have you heard of anyone able to do this? I feel kind of bad, but I truly despise the idea of working in risk now. ( My friend who's in the role right now hates it)

Told a friend of mine in tech I was considering moving to BCG. He asked me if I would have to move to Boston.

I followed up by asking what he thought the top consulting firms were. "I'd guess PwC and then McKinsey are the best. I've also heard of KPMG, Deloitte, and Bain, but I don't know much about them."

Just a reminder that outside our bubble no-one really cares about firm prestige etc.
