Also factor in work life balance and people you’ll work with. That’s super important and more important than money (I know it sounds ridiculous but it’s true)
Not ridiculous at all. People vastly underestimate the importance of the people they will have to work with and culture of the firm etc. After years of professional experience in the legal industry and outside of it, I’d put that over money any day.
Which one are you better positioned to make partner at or would allow you to lateral to the kind of firm you'd like to be partner at? Think longer term here. The big pay increase now could be far outweighed by the possibility of a more lucrative partnership opportunity elsewhere. Or maybe the partnership prospects at mid-sized are really good and you could be better off than gambling on biglaw partnership.

33% more base comp sounds like a lot. Don’t get underpaid for doing the same work. What about raises, what are they like at each firm? What is your current year level? Maybe the midsize firm isn’t as developed in this area but they want to build out and you’d have a great shot at partner there if you’re senior and bringing experience they don’t have?
What are your long term goals? Partner? In-house?
Ask them to match (or close to it)

There are midsize firms paying that much more than market? Or is this one of the V100 firms that pays significantly below market (Littler)?
Exactly
I had a similar issue. But my mid size firm only paid 10% more, not 33% more. I still went with the midsize firm bc it was a full service firm, meaning I’d have better opportunities for origination credits, V100 firm practice exclusively L&E. The commute was far better with the regional firm. And I would gain more diverse experience at the regional firm, since Id be working on several different types of assignments. Lastly, it was more money, albeit, not that much more.
I think it depends on your class year. If you’re still junior/ low midlevel (ie you feel like you need to be taught), I’d go with the firm who is strongest. It will open doors in the practice area. However? If you are senior enough and feel like at this point, you can hold your own, then I’d take the higher comp.
Is it just me or is this same dilemma posted every week?
It’s a common theme and issue and different people are going through it at different times
