Would be interesting to hear from any recruiters on here. I used to include cover letters 3-4 years ago but the world has moved on since then. I probably will not include one if I were applying for a job now unless it explicitly calls for one.

It's a catch 22 because it indicates interest. But good cover letters are a pita to write

Write one and have it on hand. Some employers in Finance are more traditional and like to see it.

I think it is still a good idea but a PIA for sure. I write one if I am really excited about it.

I am writing a cover letter too right now. Need some inspiration.

Always include it.

If you're submitting apps into online system, I would suggest trying to find a human to send the resume to. Your email to that person should be your cover letter.

Only write cover letters for the jobs you really want the most. If you are applying to multiple companies in the same industry, you could structure the cover letter to only have 1 paragraph specific to the company and the rest is about why you want to switch industries and your skills etc. That helps minimize effort

Applied for some remote SWE I & II positions at Microsoft a couple months ago but didn't bother completing the online technical screen until a few days ago. A recruiter contacted me saying I passed and scheduled three interviews for next week for the role Senior Principal Engineer. I have over 10 years of experience in SW but don't feel qualified for the role. I'd hate to think the recruiter is just using me to fulfill a rejection quota. Should I still go forward with the interviews?

There aren't many places I can speak openly about this, but Fishbowl has been a solid refuge and resource. After ~6 months of interviewing, managed to exit MBB. Moving to Europe for a strategy and ops role at FAANG. Hopefully the new role will be more enjoyable and sustainable. Sharing this here because I used to see posts like this and never thought it could happen for me - but it did. It gets better, folks. Just keep swimming.

So how do you get past algoriths? I. Can't land an interview for the life of me even though everyone always says my resume is amazing and I'm a go to for fixing disaster jobs. Is it because my name is unconventional (double first name double last name). I'm really good at dealing with clients and living up to expectations, so why is it so difficult?

HR screen interview, HR rep gave salary range of $85K- $135K & refused my next round interview w/ hiring mgr until I named specific range in which I stated $115k- $135k. HR rep then stated during screen I agreed to $115k although I said I needed to complete interviews w/hiring mgr to determine my number. All interviews finished/never discussed salary again, anticipating offer at 115k. Do I have a strong case to counter 130k if that’s the market rate & many yrs experience in this position?

Question on references: Interviewed for a very niche cyber position and recruiter made verbal offer & is suggesting listing references of peers and managers.

I plan to list peers from former non-cyber teams but they wont be able to speak to my cyber experience. However, if I list peers from my current team who can speak about my capabilities, then I will have to inform them and jeopardize my future with current firm in case I don't accept the recruiter's offer. So what do you do?
