Not necessarily — it sounds like a good secondment. And in my experience, when firms tap young non-equity partners for secondments, it’s because those young partners are seen as long-term players and good ambassadors. And also loyal to the firm. But even if that’s wrong, and the PG leader is trying to nudge your spouse into an in-house position, those are often lucrative, stable positions — I was an equity partner before going in-house and it would take a lot to get me to go back to a firm. Everyone’s priorities are different but I don’t see a downside here for your spouse.
Thank you, I appreciate your perspective on this.
In my experience, secondments are opportunities for valued associates and partners. They create tight future client relationships and are reserved for good talent that a firm wants to invest in long term. I recognize that may not be true everywhere, but it has been the case with firms I have worked in.
Sounds like less of a nudge and more of a hard shove while they slam the door behind. But I’m only an associate...
Based on the responses here it seems like my experience is the odd one out. I know seven people that have done them and only one came back when it was done, they were soon after pushed out of the firm. I’m at an AM25 firm, so maybe it’s different because people don’t normally try to leave on their own
It all depends (classic lawyer response 😁), but I think it’s a win-win. If it’s a growing client, the firm wants someone they can trust “in house.” She returns from the secondment with insider knowledge and relationships. If they’re nudging her, then take the opportunity by the neck and have the secondment be a protracted interview for a GC position!

Some firms treat secondments as nudges, at other firms they are actually prestigious and helpful. I did one, left for the client FT, make the same as I did in biglaw and have a way better quality of life in a city I actually want to be in. Worth it. I now work in tech in corporate in-house and it's great.
