Alvarez & Marsal Are there any downsides to working for A&M? I keep getting messages from their recruiters and I’m pretty tempted. However I’ve got a pretty good gig at my current firm - culture is great, I work reasonable hours, and I feel well paid. I know the money will obviously be better over at A&M but do I stand to lose my work life balance/culture?

My final round with Deloitte for UK Tech Consulting Manager position soon. Strangely it’s not a PMD round as it usually is for other Big4/tech consulting firms.
1. Can anyone tell me if they’ve been through the whole process without speaking to PMD? (First round Sr Manager, second Case Interview by a manager and third again by a manager) 2. What is a typical salary to expect? I was asked in screening but kept it vague (e.g can discuss later bla bla). I was hoping 75-80 (ridiculous?)

Came over a year ago and I’m still looking for the catch. You get paid significantly more, and in my experience, work life balance has been significantly better as well.
Do you guys hire from mid-tier FDD?
I came from EY to A&M restructuring and every aspect has been better here than my experience in Big 4. Way better pay, actual credit for my hours worked, I don’t feel like a # and have close contact with leadership as needed and the work is way more interesting to me.
I had no prior experience. I was only at EY for 1.5 year and tagged to the business transformation practice but ended up on a tech transformation for the majority of my time at EY. I worked so hard and got all the praise and good reviews from my leaders but got zero bonus and a 4% raise. So when I made the jump to A&M I jumped laterally so sacrificed my title progression timing but my total comp after this first year was almost $30k more than what I was making at EY before I left.
Here are the negatives as far as I see; They require you to be vaccinated(in my opnion this is an intrusion of my body) . In bad years your compensation will suffer as theor compensation model has a significant sharing of collections factor. They hire largely from big 4 so diversity of thought will not deviate much from what you see at big 4. Non existent outsource team. They have recently made extensive new hirings which may translate into higher pink slips if they overhire to accommodate deal pick up.
Is the vaccine still required at A&M?

Im in FDD and initially hesitated making the move for the same reasons but I’m real happy I did. I think the culture is even better here and I work the same amount. I actually wish I joined sooner!

It’s hybrid but you’d need to be in commuting distance and in a TAG city.
Here’s a question: what do A&M teams do when they get dataroom access at 6pm on a weekday or a Friday? Do you guys have to just set up the data/TBs in Excels yourselves over the evening given that there’s no India team?
Additionally, what did bonuses look like outside of this COVID period? FY18, FY19, etc.
A&M 6 have you seen people internally transfer to different groups?
As with any firm, I think it matters tremendously who you’re working for and what kind of total bandwidth your team has to avoid you getting completely swamped with work. If you can sniff that out before you join, and signs are positive, the money is definitely a lot better. That said, I’ve heard bad things about life in their M&A tax group, again mostly because of bandwidth issues / lack of support.
Not to mention their M&A group has a revenge porn felon as their top Sub K expert. Imagine having to work with this guy?! https://nypost.com/2009/01/07/ex-sex-extort-arrest/
A&M is no longer attractive to me ever since this 15% pay bump
A&M will def win at comp but if you’re happy as is, then that’s great (and I truly mean no sarcasm). Grass is always greener. If you’re happy, that’s fantastic.

If their base salary was higher I’d jump immediately. People I know there have no complaints at all
I’m a Senior as well. Came in with a base of $130.
What group? I can only speak for restructuring and the only downside I think is uncertainty of hours, but I think that probably goes for most consulting gigs. I’ll bill zero hours one month and be slammed the next day unexpectedly. Makes planning trips and even weekends difficult.
Audit > brief industry > boutique consulting (litigation & restructuring) > A&M
Only downside I imagine is exit opps bc of name. Most people in industry come from b4 and it’s easier to get hired if you work at a recognizable name/a firm that the person you came from worked at. If you want to stay in industry I doubt there is a downside, except maybe the size of deals.
Additionally, most of us already have big 4 on the resume. Heck, I did audit and FDD at two separate ones, so I have a 50% chance to connect with any big 4 alumni lol.
I don’t think they care how long you’ve been at big 4. It’s a box check
Is it difficult to get into A&M coming from B4 FDD?
how do they know you’re a strong performer?
A few questions as I’m curious as well:
(1) Deliverables: what is the quality of the work like and how are the deliverables in FDD? I’ve heard that there’s less report writing and more databook/data pack hand-ins. Is that true? And does that impact the quality of what you guys do?
(2) Office/hybrid: what’s the current situation? Are people in NYC/other big cities going in?
(3) Hours/vacation: given that bonus is directly tied to hours billed and collected, is there a culture of working heavy hours and only taking two weeks of vacation? Or is it culturally accepted to take 3-4 weeks off and just accept that bonus may be lower?
Thanks for the input, guys. Appreciate it!
