No. And I will never be. At least not at my current company.
☝️ Just like Director 1 said, I just take the day off. No more information needed.
Few years ago, I use to call and let my supervisor know that I don't feel so well physically, but I can still work from home. This was my way to avoid seeing people that day.
Nobody should be asking why you're taking a sick day unless it's extended.
Sick days are sick days. You don’t need a doctor’s note to take individual days off, so there is no need to justify them beyond you feeling unwell. It’s only when you get to a significant volume or consecutive days that you need to address a diagnosis. And from my perspective, if you need those days for your mental health, it’s a conversation you should be having with a medical professional - I started with my primary care physician.
As a team leader and someone responsible for my team‘s productivity and therefore well being, I appreciate it when my team talks to me about how they’re doing beyond their work and ensure that they know they’re in an environment that supports them. If there are issues at work that are detrimental to their mental health, I’d want to know in order to solve the issues.
I hope you have the chance to nurture that relationship with your manager or with HR but appreciate that may not be easy - know that there are circumstances where a negative work culture is due to ignorance or a lack of understanding and can be improved if just one person speaks up.
I call it a sick day and dont elaborate. I would love to work in an environment where openness was encouraged but too many people are walking around with biases that they know better than to say out loud.
I will never share the state of my mental health ever again with an employer. I went through a period of extreme depression after my dad died suddenly. My boss had been giving me a hard time about taking a long lunch to go to therapy. I told him I was suffering from depression and needed the time. He continued to harass me. I went to HR. Then I got let go.
Thank you. I don’t know if it was illegal but it was ethically wrong. I did hire a lawyer and was able to get my severance increased from 6 months to one year. However it took me three years to find another job and I had to take a title cut (director to senior manager) and a pay cut. It irrevocably changed my life for the worse. I trust no one and I have struggled to find permanent employment since, even though this happened several years ago. And the boss is still at the company (a Fortune 500 brand), even though in the year before letting me go, he had fired 3 other directors. Mind you there were only a total of 8 people on his team. He has since been promoted and is now a SVP.
You shouldn’t have to fake being physically sick. I follow the British Royals motto on PTO days “Don’t Complain, Don’t Explain.” I don’t share what I’m going thru (unless it’s like a death) I don’t complain about deadlines (just say I need this to be moved if it’s urgent - obviously I do this very rarely) and I don’t explain (I take my time handle my shit and then return).
