Try building more branding work into your book (you can even take on small freelance projects). I’m currently a designer and graduated from a 4 year state ad program. I think it’s more about your abilities so if you feel confident in your design skills and can add some more design work, switching without more education shouldn’t be a problem!
I started in branding and transitioned to Art Direction. Sometimes I miss it. But I still follow branding agencies
It’s all about craft. Agree add as much branding/design driven work to your book but also add resources for you to start studying great work, and learn to see work from a pure design perspective. Brush up on your illustration skills if you have them. Can be a great asset. Look at everything.
Hmmm things overlapped in a weird way. Because my background is mixed I didn’t have a traditional path with advertising.
But overall roughly 10 years before I went full blown Art Director. While in branding I started doing adv branding and design. From there I was doing heavy design on banking stuff but our agency began to do tv so I began learning about concepting. I dipped into digital for 2 years because print was dying and that’s where I did both concepting and design. After that I was in love and decided to focus only on that. The last 5 years has been all art direction.
It may not take you long to pick up design. You may be much further along. I knew nothing about advertising and fell into it.
Thanks so much for your thoughts!
