6) Whomever senior leaders decide to move out of the way for their cronies.
2,4,5. MF’s laid me off less than a week before my 48th birthday.
It’s going to be 2 years in November, still no work.
I’ve heard it can be based on:
-salary
-if you’ve pissed someone off or someone doesn’t like you
-if you’ve made too much “noise” (called out issues)
-ease of making redundant
-performance
-ability to fill role at a lower salary
-culture fit
All true.
I think I’ve ticked a few of those boxes each time I was shown the door.
Having been on both sides of a layoff, it’s terrible for both. But way worse for the people getting laid off, obviously.
It’s meant to be tied to the piece of business that can no longer afford as many people. And finance/resource management will tell you how much salary you need to lose.
Realistically, you want to save the people who do great work or that have an important skill set or that the client won’t want to lose. So you try to angle it that way. If possible.
But sometimes, it just cuts too deep and you have to let them take people you hate to lose. Or you only get to cut from a certain salary band. Or that role just isn’t open any more. And there are often wider departmental or agency concerns, like they want to make sure it’s not all juniors, etc.
Essentially, individuals have some control but there are a lot of agendas from different departments.
The best way to be as safe as possible is to be liked, provide a ton of value, and/or have skills or relationships others don’t. But it happens to everyone at some point.
The initial list is usually first determined by the finance department.
After that, managers refer to Strat1’s list above as to whether or not pull the trigger

Not a bucket, no.

In my case, I’m pretty sure because we didn’t get any new projects.
No issues on performance & had great peer reviews.
I learnt all of the proprietary software and trained new people, participated in all the “culture” activities/ clubs, welcoming new hires etc. Even won a costume contest the week before I was laid off. lol
What I didn’t understand is why no one from new biz or accounts got laid off.
At the end you are just a line in a spread sheet/time sheet, if your position doesn’t make them money, bye.
