Beginner 🐟 here. I have a Chase Sapphire Preferred card, and I want to upgrade to an Amex Gold. Before the next annual fee hits my card on May 1, how can I switch to the Amex card without paying the Chase annual fee? Also I would like to avoid a hard credit check or taking a hit to my credit score because I’m discontinuing the Chase card.

Don’t listen to people telling you to cancel the Chase card. Just call and downgrade it to the no-fee Chase card so it doesn’t hurt your credit score.

You can change your Chase card to one of their free ones like Chase Freedom. That will maintain your credit history and points but avoid the fee.

If you are getting a new Amex I don't think there is a way to avoid having a hard pull on your credit. I don't follow why you are trying to "upgrade" your cards towards a house, those have nothing to do with each other. If you want the Amex for points or whatever, sure, otherwise you can just keep the free Chase card.

Thanks. I should clarify that cards and house have nothing to do with each other. I’m just trying to get my credit score up to a very high level.

Why do you want to "upgrade" your credit card? Why not just cut the cards up and pay cash?

I used to do that before for 2-3 years. But I noticed that my credit score got stuck in a lower band and did not go up at all. Now I’m trying to move up the credit card chain to boost my credit band upwards so that I can be in the best position to buy a house in future. Note that I’ve only had one debt that I paid off in 3 months and never had any debt nor missed payments.

Need advice. Have some credit card debt that I’ve been working to pay off. Have made progress but want to lower it quickly. We have dual income, with a house (~$300k in equity), 1 kid and 1 on the way. I’ve looked into debt consolidation via HELOC but also have ~$80k in vested equity in my company that I haven’t touched. Get equity refreshes every year. Would it be smarter to cash out $15k-$20k of that to pay debt vs. a HELOC at ~5% given that will still require mthly payments

I racked up about $20k in credit card debt due to a confluence of things happening at once (move, school expenses , etc ). I have a fair amount of paper assets but not a much free cash. Assets are down a decent amount with the current market cycle and I’d prefer not to sell them to cover the debt , although they easily could. Any suggestions how to handle the credit card debt without racking up tons of ongoing card interest?

My boyfriend and I make 200K combined and live in NJ. We have $1000 in monthly car payments combined. That’s all we owe. Our credit scores are in the 800s. We have 50K to put down on a home. We have done the math and I know we can afford much more but he doesn’t want to buy more than a 400K home. I’m almost positive we can afford 500K and be more than ok. But then he starts to talk about how much kids cost and how we will be house poor and we won’t be able to afford kids. đŸ€” Am I insane??

Seeking feedback on GAP insurance. I had a family member who purchased a car in June or July. They were in an accident last week and it sounds like the car will be declared a total loss. Never dealt with this before, so wanted to ask if anyone has ever had an instance where the insurance didn't cover the outstanding balance of the loan and the insured then owed money? Car was $35k, $7k down, finance $28k. Gap insurance is through lender, not auto insurer.
